What You Will Do

Partner with the Group Leader in management and scientific leadership of the Subatomic Physics Group (P‐25). P-25 is currently comprised of approximately 55 permanent staff and post-docs, in addition to a large fluctuating student and visiting scientist population. The group carries out basic and applied research at LANSCE and other accelerator facilities around the world in the areas of fundamental symmetries, heavy ion research, nucleon structure physics, neutrino physics, proton radiography and threat reduction. We oversee two LANSCE facilities – the UltraCold Neutron and the Proton Radiography facilities.

The P-25 Group partnership opportunity allows for an outstanding candidate to support the Group's strategic and tactical planning in maintaining and achieving the long‐range Group vision and mission. You would help in the development of the group’s strategic plan, developing programs, promoting effective partnering with other LANL and outside organizations, oversight of group financial and human resource management, and safety & security management. This is nominally a half-time position so the successful candidate will also be expected to perform research in one, or more, of the Group’s Teams.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A record of successful research in a scientific field relevant to at least one of the Group's core research areas or programs, as demonstrated by published articles or project reports.

  • Capability in program development and demonstrated scientific and organizational leadership as evidenced by the ability to form, organize, administer, and lead scientific projects, teams.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the professional development and mentoring of employees.

  • Experience in recruitment and hiring processes.

  • Financial management skills and commitment to good business practices as demonstrated by performance and accomplishments in previous work assignments.

  • Record of effective written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, letters of reference, interactions with colleagues both inside and outside the Lab, and by seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications.

  • Record of commitment to safety, security, quality, diversity in the workplace, and AA/EEO.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with P-25 LANSCE facilities (pRad and UCN) and/or the management of comparable experimental facilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to build productive partnerships and new programs with other groups at Los Alamos.

  • Good working knowledge of laboratory financial, management, and ES&H; practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with Laboratory management

  • Familiarity with Laboratory administrative policies and procedures.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns. The Physics Division is a multi-disciplinary division at Los Alamos National Laboratory working to answer science questions about the nature of the universe and providing solutions for national security concerns. The Subatomic Physics Group (P‐25) within the Division, works on nuclear physics experiments that advance the understanding of the subatomic matter of the universe and applies nuclear physics expertise to solve problems of national importance.
