What You Will Do

Reporting to the Detonator Production (DET) Division Leader, the Deputy Division Leader (DDL) provides scientific, technical, and operational leadership to the Division. The DDL will function as a key part of the division management team that has the responsibilities for proper work authorization, quality assurance practices, human resource management, recruiting, and continuing development of division capabilities. The DDL will be expected to take a significant role in the strategic planning efforts for the division, as well as the broader manufacturing capability across the Laboratory.

Detailed Description:

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing effective leadership to enable the workforce to succeed in division milestones and deliverables.

  • Maintaining and strengthening the division's scientific and technical base by participating in the development and programmatic direction for the division.

  • Working with the division leader, group leaders and program managers to ensure effective line and program planning and integration.

  • Identifying and acting on opportunities to influence direction, policy and vision, both internal and external to the organization.

  • Determining and promoting long-range goals to ensure that the division performs at the highest standards relevant to national security.

  • Maintaining a positive work environment and mentoring and developing personnel.

  • Recruiting and retaining critical skills in the workforce.

  • Supporting diversity, affirmative action, ES&H;, security, and community relations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated accomplishments and expertise in one or more of the division’s core capabilities, or a closely related scientific or engineering field.

  • Successful experience in leading diverse teams in organizational excellence to include establishing, monitoring, and reporting on performance metrics.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a multidisciplinary group of scientists, engineers, technicians, students and professional staff in a fast-pasted production environment.

  • Demonstrated excellence in the leadership and management of technical projects and staff, that includes a record of successful teamwork and consensus building within and across organizational boundaries.

  • Proven ability to identify, secure and lead programs, obtain and allocate resources and deliver within scope, schedule and budget.

  • Demonstrated experience leading business operations to include financial, human resources, procurement, and other related business activities.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with explosive materials management, as well as explosives and manufacturing facility operations.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing management practices such as inventory control, configuration management, resource planning, scheduling, shop floor control, and quality control.

  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory programs and technical organizations.

  • In‐depth knowledge of Plutonium Science and Manufacturing mission related programs.

  • Active DOE Q-Clearance.

  • Advanced degree in engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related science preferred.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related science.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety, security and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting research into new defense programs. It is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology among others.

The Detonator Production Agency (PA) manufactures a wide variety of War Reserve (WR) and experimental detonators for use by a diverse set of customers. The Detonator PA also performs detonator surveillance to support early identification of stockpile aging concerns and strives to predict the lifetime of weapon components and materials. The Detonator PA plans to build a large number of detonators each year for various weapon systems and experiments, and is considered a growth area for the Laboratory. Both manufacturing and surveillance processes are conducted at the Laboratory’s Technical Area 22 (TA-22).
