Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Design Engineer for Space-Based Detection Systems (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Space Electronics and Signal Processing (ISR-4) is looking for an experienced electrical engineer to lead in the development of custom instrumentation for various space-based systems. These systems can include:
Systems being developed for the High Altitude and Space Monitoring program in support of the nonproliferation and nuclear event detection missions
Systems for planetary science missions
Smallsat and cubesat systems
Responsibilities include the specification, design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of electrical subsystems, modules/circuit cards or FPGAs. Emphasis is on self-initiative and technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical assemblies.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience developing and leading original module or circuit designs in at least one of the following areas: Analog, Digital, and/or RF/Microwave Design
For Analog design engineers
Demonstrated experience with low noise analog design particularly for use with sensors
Demonstrated experience with mixed analog/digital systems
Demonstrated experience with High speed analog to digital conversion (gigasample)
For RF/Microwave design engineers
Demonstrated experience with RF/microwave components and their system applications (amplifiers, receivers, synthesizers)
Demonstrated experience with fabrication and packaging for RF/microwave circuits and systems
Demonstrated experience with transmission lines, impedance matching, and signal integrity
Demonstrated experience designing various antenna topologies
For digital design engineer
Synchronous design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of FPGA or other digital circuits
VHDL or Verilog
Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design
Digital circuit card design
Demonstrated experience with advanced design & analysis tools, such as schematic capture tools, analog or digital simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, and/or printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools
Demonstrated experience with advanced system design and data analysis tools, such as Matlab
Demonstrated experience integrating and debugging analog or digital subsystems
Demonstrated experience in the design of analog and digital interfacing circuits for processing signals captured by various types of transduction elements.
Experience with signal integrity analysis particularly as it pertains to very low noise designs
Knowledge of PC board layout practices as it pertains to critical stack up and controlled impedance designs
Good oral, written and presentation communication skills
This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship
Experience with space flight and high reliability hardware development and testing methods
Experience leading a small team of junior engineers and skilled technicians from design concept through to completed systems
Experience with RHA (Radiation Hardness Assurance programs) and Military Standard parts, such as those called out in DSCC (Defense Supply Center Columbus) and what that means for specifying electronic parts are desired
Knowledge of digital communication systems and/or other digital signal processing
Knowledge of configuration management and formal verification methods
Experience leading small projects including financial responsibility
Active DOE Q Clearance
Bachelors or Master’s degree from an ABET accredited college or university in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or similar field with 6-8 years of experience or a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or similar field with 4-6 years of experience.

ISR-4 is a space electronics and signal processing group that specializes in space based radiation measurement and basic science missions. ISR has been developing, building, and operating space based systems for over 50 years. In addition, the group develops electronics for terrestrial and airborne scientific and national security applications along with the requisite ground support and test equipment. The group’s projects receive funding and requirements from various government agencies including the DOE, DOD, and NASA. Projects are executed through a close interaction between all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists, which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment.
