Los Alamos National Laboratory HPC Cybersecurity Lead (Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3 - ($94,500-157,800)
Assist HPC management in developing and implementing the overall cybersecurity posture of the supercomputing assets managed by HPC division.
Understand the technical elements that differentiate a supercomputing environment from other computing environments in a cybersecurity context.
Coordinate work on significant and/or complex cyber issues requiring analysis of situation alternatives or data.
Represent and advocate for an effective supercomputing security posture to Laboratory upper management and oversight bodies in both DOE and DoD accreditation regimes.
Identify and develop mitigations for known threats to a supercomputing environment.
Evaluate and recommend new software tools and packages for possible inclusion in HPC security software stack.
Lead development of technical products such as reviews, assessments, security plans, and publications.
Work across organizational HPC groups, Laboratory Divisions and oversight agencies on security system management and testing.
Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4 - ($114,500-192,900)
In addition to the duties outlined above, Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4 will:
Independently lead work on unusually significant and/or complex cyber issues requiring analysis of situation alternatives, or data, providing guidance and direction as appropriate to HPC technical staff.
Develop and present technical reports and briefings on system vulnerabilities to convey risks, impacts and recommendations to senior management and/or external personnel.
Identify and develop mitigations for new classes of threat in a supercomputing environment.
Represent and advocate for an effective supercomputing security posture at a national level.
Advocate for changes in policy and procedure to more effectively enable supercomputing security to Laboratory upper management and federal oversight bodies.
An established role in cybersecurity as applied to a supercomputing environment.
Experience working with cybersecurity oversight agencies.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3
Significant knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: cyber security, information security, information assurance, computer science.
Effective interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Advanced knowledge of distributed systems, including system architectures, computer networks, and software.
Advanced knowledge of classic and contemporary cyber threats and vulnerabilities and demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge to system engineering, analytics, or operations.
Advanced knowledge of measurement tools for vulnerability assessment, detection and mitigation.
Linux system experience.
Knowledge and experience working with HPC systems.
Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4 level requires:
Expert knowledge and practical experience at the advanced level expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: cyber security, information security, information assurance, computer science.
Demonstrated expert knowledge of distributed systems, including system architectures, computer networks, and software.
Expert technical knowledge of classic and contemporary cyber threats and vulnerabilities and demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge to system engineering, analytics, or operations.
Expert knowledge of and demonstrated experience creating measurement tools for vulnerability assessment, detection and mitigation.
Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a technical field and a minimum of 8 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Cybersecurity Technical Staff 4: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a technical field and a minimum of 12 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The High‐Performance Computing Division (HPC) provides production high performance computing systems services to the Laboratory. Our work spans the early phases of acquisition, development, and production readiness of HPC platforms continuing to the maintenance and operation of these systems and the facilities in which they are housed. HPC also manages the network, parallel file system, storage, and visualization infrastructure associated with the HPC platforms. This division also supports the HPC user base directly and aids, at multiple levels, in the effective use of HPC to generate science. Additionally we support selected research activities that we deem important to our mission.
