What You Will Do
The Designer/Drafter 4will be primarily responsible for performing design/drafting duties to produce original engineering design drawing packages to support a diverse suite of engineering projects at LANL. The design/drafting activities will fall within the framework of established conduct of engineering practices. The selected candidate will work with customers, technicians and other R&D; design engineering staff, to ensure project deliverables are attained.

The candidate shall be at a senior skilled level with demonstrated skills and knowledge beyond those expected at the early career level. The candidate will apply extensive knowledge and skills to complete mechanical assemblies, component and sub-component models and drawings and has full knowledge of other related engineering disciplines.
Comprehensive understanding of general and technical aspects of computer-aided drafting techniques, modeling and design, and 3D parametric systems.
Demonstrated knowledge of Creo / Pro Engineer or other 3D CAD systems, Engineering Standards, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently provide high quality models and drawings with adherence to the associated standards and collaborate with Integrated Project Team members and apply advanced technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques in the completion of complex work assignments.
Demonstrated ability to work on several tasks for multiple customers.
Apply cross-functional knowledge to resolve design issues.
Develop design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications.
Apply advanced knowledge of engineering materials and their suitability for complex component fabrication. Make materials decisions of design packages.
Work with engineers to create dimensioning strategies.
Mentor lower-level designers in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual, as appropriate for job duties.
Perform off-project design reviews.
Utilize working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model report generation.
May perform drawing checks.
Work is performed without significant direction. Completed work is reviewed from the perspective of desired results.
Approve non-conformance reports and evaluate potential design changes to eliminate future problems.
Promote a mutually respectful work environment and has demonstrated ability to work well with a team, and receive constructive criticism from fellow designers, engineers or other reviewers.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Creo / Pro Engineer experience is preferred.
Experience coordinating fabrication with LANL and /or local machine shops.
Hands-on experience assembling, installing, troubleshooting, and commissioning engineering systems and/or hardware.
Experience with aerospace design practices and standards.
Experience with electronics packaging.
Experience with Windchill software.
Education: The candidate shall have extensive previous experience of four to six years in the area of mechanical design and drafting. An associate’s degree in engineering or a related technical field is preferred.
Clearance: Q/SCI(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
