What You Will Do

ThePlasmaTheory and ApplicationGroup(XCP-6)appliestheoreticalandcomputationalplasmaphysics to model and design novel ICF/HED experiments, theoretical models, and computational algorithms. Areasofparticularinterestare:inertialconfinementfusion;highenergydensityphysics;turbulenceand/orperturbedplasmaflows;algorithmandmodeldevelopmentforplasmaandhighenergydensityscience.Thisresearchmayleadtothedesign,fielding,andanalysisofexperimentsattheLaboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE),andNationalIgnitionFacility (NIF)lasersorontheZmachinepulsedpowerfacility. The successful candidate will be expected to continue fundamental or applied research in his/her areas of specialization as well as to support the national-security programs and mission of the Laboratory.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A doctoral degree in physics, engineering, astrophysics, applied mathematics or a closely related field completed within the last five years or soon to be completed

  • Demonstrated record of scientific achievements in the fields of ICF/HED Design, Thermonuclear Burn Physics,MHD, Plasma Physics (theory, simulation or code development),Plasma Transport and Turbulence or Kinetic Plasma Effects

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment

Desired Skills:

  • Experience running large, parallel codes in a high-performance, Unix computing environment

  • Experience in fielding and analysis of experimental data

  • Experience in modeling ICF/HED experiments
