Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Project Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The successful candidate will perform the following duties in this position:

  • Supports Project Manager in the oversight of engineering activity (all disciplines) on a project, or designated portions of a project.

  • Plans and directs engineering assignments on the project. Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments.

  • Understands standard engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating, and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques.

  • Establishes the detailed project execution plan and the development of the overall project engineering budget and schedule.

  • Performs and manages the work in accordance with relevant LANL standards.

  • Directs engineering activities in preparation of project proposals, including estimates for engineering staffing, quantities, scope reviews, schedules and other functional groups.

  • Originates, reviews, and/or approves design documents, change orders, material requisitions and specifications for construction or procurement use.

  • Supervises the preparation of, reviews and endorses bid analyses and recommendations for procurement of equipment material and services within Engineering's scope of responsibility.

  • Coordinates activities among the design groups on the project.

  • Review project engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required.

  • Makes recommendation to Engineering Management of key personnel for project assignments.

  • Prepares or directs the preparation of project studies, reports, forecasts, special engineering reports and plant data book.

  • Ensures that Technical Risk Assessments are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding design documentation are in compliance with project Quality Assurance plan and procedures.

  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to client, project and functional management as directed and as appropriate.

  • Champions the creation of a project work environment, supported by leadership on the project/program, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Project Engineer 4 duties are as follows:

  • Provide expert advice and consultation to Project Management, Facility Engineering, and Engineering Services management.

  • Lead and integrate team activities into overall plan to support the overall project requirements including technical quality, cost, and schedule.

  • Implement Conduct of Maintenance and Conduct of Engineering procedures and best practices

  • Support the necessary procedures/program to support the Project Engineering function.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Engineer 3 ($94,500-$157,800)

  • Advanced knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures consistent with the duties described above.

  • Proven experience of project execution processes and procedures, detailed engineering, and construction work processes.

  • Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved and current knowledge of new methods of design and construction.

  • Ability to provide supervision.Excellent verbal and written communication skillsProficient with all (MS Office Suite).

  • Experience working with EVMS compliant schedule and cost control systems.

  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience.

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience as a Project Engineer

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or architecture

Project Engineer 4 ($114,500-$192,900)

In addition to the job requirements outlined above, the Project Engineer 4 requirements are as follows:

  • Demonstrated experience as a senior technical advisor implementing, overseeing, and assessing engineering activities.

  • Understanding of and experience working with Performance Based Indicators.

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to Vital Safety Systems such as DOE 0 420.1and DOE STD- 1189.

  • Working knowledge of related non-reactor nuclear codes, standards, best practice non-nuclear nuclear/hazardous mechanical confinement systems, and knowledge in generation of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs;).

  • Demonstrated experience with development of safety class and safety significant designs.

  • Experience in the development and implementation of a Project engineering program.

  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Project Engineer.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards and LANL Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures

  • PMP certification

  • Professional Engineering license
