What You Will Do

The Institutional Quality (IQ) group supports the Laboratory by assisting organizations ensure quality work is executed consistently and effectively across the institution. The IQ mission is to integrate quality requirements into processes, validate that policies and programs meet regulatory and customer requirements and expectations, and develop/manage electronic systems to support the QPA division institutional programs.Individuals at this level have a full understanding of specialized area plus working knowledge in other related areas. The selected candidates for this position will be expected to work in accordance with customer specified criteria and with nuclear facility and weapons related requirements to ensure that the specified technical and quality requirements are met. The individual will perform assigned work in accordance to specific Technical Area 55 (TA-55) facility administrative and technical requirements, policies, and procedures.


The Quality Engineer 2 will report directly to the QPA-IQ Group Leader and will be deployed to Nuclear Process Infrastructure specifically as a NPI-8 Equipment Installation Quality Assurance Representative. On project, the selected candidate reports directly to the Quality Assurance Manager.

The selected candidate will be expected to review and prepare procurement documentation germane to quality assurance and quality engineering requirements. The selected candidate will participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures, and applications contributing to the overall objective of sustaining an effective engineering, procurement, and construction Quality Management System. The individual will participate in nonconformance reporting and corrective action processes. The selected candidate will lead, coordinate, and/or conduct audits and surveillance of quality-affecting engineering, procurement, construction, and ancillary project work. The selected candidate will take day-to-day direction from an assigned, sub-project specific QA Lead.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge and application of 10 CFR 830 Subpart A, DOE Order 414.1D, national consensus standard ASME NQA-1—2008/ASME NQA-1a-2009 Addenda, and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide Series or equivalent.

  • Working knowledge and application of national and/or international codes and standards e.g., OSHA, International Building Code (IBC), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)

  • Working knowledge of construction QA activities supporting procurement and engineering products, including Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) work packages and application of graded approach in an NQA-1 environment.

  • Working technical knowledge of the application of engineering, procurement, and construction practices sufficient to comprehend specified QA requirements for these disciplines.

  • Demonstrated experience participating in and supporting quality assessments, surveillance, and/or audits.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to ensure quality assurance requirements are met during the design, bid, build, and start-up of nuclear, non-nuclear, high-, moderate, and low-hazard facilities and equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and schematics.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, facilitates collaboration and coordination to solve complex problems, and demonstrated experience interacting and effectively communicating with all levels of project and client personnel.

  • Proven record of customer focused success and participating in cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

  • Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and schedule work to ensure completion in accordance with requirements, deadlines, and budget.

Desired Skills:

  • E xperience as an Management & Operating (M&O;) contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE)

  • Currently or previously Lead Auditor qualified.

Education:Bachelor’s degree in engineering, quality assurance, industrial systems engineering or elated field with a minimum of 3 years related experience in construction, nuclear operations or process laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
