What You Will Do

This position is for a lead accountant on the General Ledger team. The General Ledger team is responsible for the timely and accurate monthly and year end closing of the general ledger, high level review of proper accounting treatment of financial activities, and preparing or overseeing the preparation of detailed, complex financial accounting reports and statements. This position is involved with general ledger maintenance, monitoring/reviewing accounting transactions to ensure good business practices and adherence to corporate policies, analysis and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, analysis of changes in account balances, and other financial statement related activities. The selected candidate should have leadership capabilities, to include mentoring peers, subordinates, and students. Must have the ability to conduct complex research, interpret and make recommendations on accounting related issues. May be required to review and assist in resolution of client inquiries and audit exceptions requiring interpretation of the contract, DOE orders/guidance, accounting standards or Laboratory policies and practices. The selected candidate must be able to work outside a normal work schedule. Reliability and availability are required.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and financial concepts and principles, plus working knowledge of related activities gained specialized work experience.

  • Extensive knowledge of complex accounting and financial analysis; developing, interpreting and applying financial policies and procedures.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience to interpret and apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS); financial accounting and cost accounting; developing, interpreting and applying financial policies and procedures.

  • Experience in independently analyzing and evaluating alternative courses of action and making decisions and recommendations which impact financial and business performance assignments at the institutional level.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to resolve, persuade, motivate, negotiate, influence, and build consensus among others with tact and diplomacy in order to successfully implement changes and acceptance of new ideas or concepts.

  • Well-developed organizational skills to independently establish priorities and to execute business and financial assignments.

Desired Skills:

  • Previous supervisory experience

  • Certified Public Accountant certification


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or business related field and typically eight years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The General Ledger (GL) Team has overall responsibility for capturing, recording, and reporting the financial condition of the Laboratory. Cost transactions and balance sheet activity are funneled through this team for editing and posting to the Oracle General Ledger and Oracle Project Accounting modules. Subsequent to closing the general ledger each month, the team reports the financial activity to DOE at Headquarters via the Standard Accounting and Reporting System (STARS) transmission and later provides the financial statement analysis to DOE in Albuquerque.
