CMR Facility Operator (Operator 4/5)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Operator 4/Operator 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Chemical Metallurgy Research (CMR) Facility Operator is the primary interface between facility groups and the operations group. The Operator participates in walk-downs for maintenance activities. Performance of Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) and other surveillances is required to ensure compliance within the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA). The Facility Operator is required to post hazard warning placards, take remedial actions for abnormal events, and restrict access to areas to keep the facility residents safe. The person selected for this position must understand various types of facility equipment and their principles of operation. The Facility Operator will assist in work controls (i.e., lock-out/tag-out) and exercise/reinforce Laboratory safe to work practices. This position will assist the Shift Operations Supervisor, and report to the Shift Operations Manager. A formal qualification program and successful completion of a comprehensive exam is required, as well as maintaining all mandatory Laboratory and facility continuing training.

Facility Operator 4 ($69,500-$110,300)

Fully Qualified, experienced operator as defined by the organizations training qualification program. Responsible for safe execution of technical safety requirement surveillances required to meet safety basis requirements and supporting operations in the facility.

Facility Operator 5 ($83,900-$136,600)

Fully Certified operator regarded as an expert. Recognized as a facility lead on off-shifts, with adequate knowledge and ability to make technical decisions regarding safe operations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Advanced knowledge with facility operational protocols in an industrial environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of typical facility electrical and mechanical systems, sub-systems and components (i.e. heating, ventilation, air conditioning, steam, vacuum pumps, power supply, etc.)
  • Advanced taking logs and performing surveillance on critical equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, understand and explain engineering electrical and mechanical drawings/specifications.
  • Advanced knowledge with lock-out/tag-out programs in an industrial environment.
  • Experience using relatable skills to assist in modification, revision, and review of procedures.
  • Experience working under minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite applications

In addition to the minimum job requirements outlined above, Facility Operator 5 requires:
  • Expert experience making dimensional, physical, and/or electrical calibrations.
  • Expert understanding of and ability to identify work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration. Have expert-level knowledge of lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
  • Expert knowledge of surveillance procedures.

Education/Experience Facility Operator 4: Requires a relevant associate's degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience Facility Operator 5: Requires an associate's degree in a relevant field and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and certification, may be expected.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Extensive knowledge of implementing DOE Orders pertinent to Nuclear Facilities.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in LANL nuclear facilities and operations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of codes such as UBC, UPC, NEC, UMC, NFPA, and OSHA are a plus.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
