What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Job Title Lower/Higher level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Maintenance Coordinator (MC) reports to the MSS-TA55 Maintenance Coordinator Team Leader and the Maintenance Manager and provides support for implementing the Annual Maintenance Plan for the MSS-TA55 Organization. The MC role is to ensure that the functionality of the systems and equipment in assigned facilities/areas are maintained. The MC works to achieve optimum availability of the systems and equipment assigned.

The MC provides direct or indirect support to the maintenance function of a facility through the implementation and/or administrative control of a variety of maintenance programs, policies, functions, and objectives. The MC shall verify that maintenance activities are performed in accordance with the Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Engineering, and Conduct of Maintenance program requirements, technical specifications, manufacturer's requirements, and/or generally accepted industry practices.

The MC maintains and retains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance and makes safety and security an integral part of every task. This includes taking the necessary steps to pause or stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Maintenance Coordinator 2 ($76,900 - $122,200)

The successful candidate will be expected to process Facility Service Requests for the assigned area(s) to both the customer/requestor and maintenance team which includes:
  • Providing accurate scope of work for the Work Order (WO) description, walk-down and validation of FSRs prior to writing WOs.
  • Developing a clear and concise scope of work in the Facility Service Request and Maintenance Subcontractor Request systems.
  • Assigning appropriate cost codes to WOs.
  • Providing communication line for customers to track and get updates, FSR Updates, i.e. statuses, communication.
  • Providing coordination and scheduling of Quick Fix/Minor Maintenance (QF/MM) work orders for assigned areas.
  • Serving as a back-up Lockout/Tag-out Coordinator.
  • Assigning WO hazard analysis, tracking WO costs, participating in PM workshops, and involved in WO closeouts.
Maintenance Coordinator 3 ($83,900 - $136,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level this position is expected to:
  • Have in depth knowledge of specific complex maintenance activities and programs.
  • Investigate, recommend and develop method improvement impacting the areas of safety, work implementation, planning, scheduling, and acceptance testing.
  • Provide input into PM workshops.
  • Participate in the engineering design process for modifications.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Communication: Ability to conceptualize and fully communicate major elements of facility maintenance to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Business Systems & Processes: Working knowledge with facility maintenance and/or construction management including systems engineering design and maintenance, safety basis, configuration management programs, work control, facility control systems, and/or upgrades and renovations. Understanding of government and industry regulations affecting facility maintenance. Knowledge of facility maintenance preventive maintenance policies and procedures.

Technical Expertise: Knowledge in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting work planning. Ability to fully understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Strategic Communication: Experience communicating complex work scheduling activities around Safety Basis Documents, Engineering practices, and/or Operations requirements.

Business Systems & Processes: In-depth knowledge with facility maintenance and/or construction management including systems engineering design and maintenance, safety basis, configuration management programs, work control, facility control systems, and upgrades and/or renovations. Full understanding of government and industry regulations affecting facility maintenance. In-depth experience in working under facility maintenance preventive maintenance policies and procedures.

Technical Expertise:
Expertise and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting Work Control and the Work Management Center. Ability to fully utilize and manipulate a computerized work management system in maintaining and tracking job activities.

Education/Experience at Maintenance Coordinator 2 Level: Position requires a Bachelors' Degree and a minimum of 5 years of technical and maintenance related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Maintenance Coordinator 3 Level: Position requires a Bachelors' Degree and a minimum of 8 years of technical and maintenance related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2 Minimum Requirements: Position requires 1 year of job-related experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using footprints, CMMS, or similar computerized maintenance system.
  • Active Q Clearance.
  • HRP Certification.
  • Full understanding of the Laboratory's maintenance and facility policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience in Facility Operations, Engineering and/or Maintenance.
  • Working experience on various mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Nuclear Facility Experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and proficiency with the Lockout/Tag-out program.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Sitting, walking and climbing ladders/stairs.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
