What You Will Do_
The position resides in the Radiation Science Team and interfaces with Nuclear Energy programs. The successful candidate will carry out research relevant to the process/structure/properties of ceramic materials for Nuclear Energy programs using traditional ceramic processing techniques, feedstock synthesis and characterization, microstructural characterization utilizing electron microscopy, thermo-physical and thermo-mechanical property determination, thermodynamic and thermo-chemical assessments, and others as necessary. Focus is execution of experimental research programs (DOE-NE, NNSA) to understand chemistry-structure-property-performance relationships of ceramic materials.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
R&D; Scientist 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)
Scientist 3 will be responsible for leading research areas and a broad set of activities across several scientific disciplines in support of research and development (R&D;) science specifically related to Nuclear Energy. Scientist 3 will have direct technical over-sight of technologists, students, and/or postdocs. The candidate will need to be able to apply scientific principles under the scientific method to address technical problems; or to develop novel techniques or principles; or to analyze data or outcomes from experiments (in the real world or in the computational domain) or from observational procedures in the context of the underlying scientific principles or models. Scientist 3 is a capable professional with expertise in several relevant disciplines or in a narrow, specialized field. The position will require direct interface with customers, writing reports, and providing program updates.
R&D; Scientist 4 ($116,900 - $197,000)
In addition to R&D; Scientist 3 responsibilities, the Scientist 4 is expected to translate national needs into technological objectives for scientific research and development (R&D;) which is defined as the application of scientific principles under the scientific method to address technical problems; or to develop novel techniques or principles; or to analyze data or outcomes from experiments (in the real world or in the computational domain) or from observational procedures in the context of the underlying scientific principles or models. Recognized as a technical expert in area of specialization.
