What You Will Do
The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group (C-CDE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated person for the position of Research Technician. C-CDE is an applied technology organization focused on resolving national security-related issues in stockpile manufacturing and support, surveillance, applied and basic energy sciences, threat reduction, public health, and the environment. The group's core approach involves the integrated development and application of technologies utilizing underlying scientific expertise in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Polymers, Microbiology, Explosives, Chemical Process Development and/or Chemical Engineering. C-CDE engages in areas important to Laboratory missions, including material characterization and development, weapons support, and environmental mitigation. The highly interdisciplinary nature of these activities requires scientists and engineers who can seamlessly operate within, and transition between, traditional academic disciplines. The successful applicant will work both collaboratively and independently on C-CDE projects.
This position will be filled at either the Research Tec 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Research Tec 4 ($ 60,400 - $ 95,900)
The successful candidate will be required to:
Follow set experimental procedures and methods.
Prepare samples for analytical measurements.
Operate and maintain equipment and analytical instrumentation.
Prepare data packages for review by supervisor.
Safely handle a diverse set of hazardous materials (e.g. acids, cryogens, radioactive materials).
Follow stringent Quality Assurance requirements.
Research Tec 5 ($ 72,500 - $ 118,200)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Tec 5 will be required to:
Contribute to the development of new analytical methods
Contribute to work planning and work independently across multiple teams
Troubleshoot various types of equipment and instruments
Contribute to specification and procurement of new equipment and instruments.
Independently prepare data packages and contributes directly to reports and presentations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles and a background in chemistry or materials science.
Demonstrated experience in standard benchtop chemical techniques and laboratory procedures.
Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following analytical techniques: GC, GC-MS, LC, LC-MS, FTIR, TGA, DSC, DMA, SEM, XPS, XRF, trace metal analysis via ICP-MS or ICP-OES.
Demonstrated excellent work ethic, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated experience in effectively interacting with colleagues and customers in a team environment.
Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship).
Additional Job Requirements for Research Tec 5:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Research Tec 5 level requires:
Demonstrated experience in setting up, calibrating, running, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex analytical instruments.
Demonstrated experience in applying scientific principles to method development and continuous process improvement.
Demonstrated experience in organizing, processing, analyzing, presenting, and reporting large and complex data sets.
Proven experience in prioritizing and completing multiple projects, assignments
Experience with data analysis software tools such as Origin and Microsoft Office products.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet multiple programmatic deliverables within a fixed timeframe.
Knowledge and experience in polymer characterization, corrosion science, or materials characterization.
Knowledge and experience working under formal Quality Assurance programs.
Demonstrated experience in developing and conducting experiments with radiological materials or sources.
Experience with high-vacuum equipment.
Experience with electrochemical corrosion measurements.
Experience with CAD software such as Solidworks, or with LabView programming.
Documented record of working safely and responsibly in a scientific laboratory.
Level 4 position typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and four to six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level 5 position typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and six-to-ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A bachelor’s degree is usually preferred.
Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
