What You Will Do

Provide IT support for programmatic research in the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Theoretical Division is a diverse environment that covers many disciplines of theoretical science, including applied mathematics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and much of theoretical physics.

This position will be filled at either theComputing Systems Professional 2 (CSP2) /Computing Systems Professional 3 (CSP3) level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

CSP2($72,500 – $118,200)The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot Linux servers and desktops in a heterogeneous network environment.

  • Resolve issues or fulfill requests through remote support.

  • Troubleshoot technical issues through on-site field support.

  • Communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Work on assigned projects, both independently and through team collaboration.

  • Document hardware and software configurations of division resources.

CSP3 ($87,800 – $144,800)In addition to the duties outlined above, the CSP3 will be required to:

  • Support, maintain, configure and design work-group clusters.

  • Support and maintain servers on the unclassified network.

  • Maintain and enhance configuration management scripts.

  • Act as a division Point of Contact for IT related matters.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in problem solving in a heterogeneous networked environment.

  • Knowledge of security measures, Linux hardening and encryption methods.

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively as a member of a team in a structured and controlled environment.

  • Knowledge of emerging technologies.

  • Collaborate with fellow team members in advanced Linux system administration.

  • Experience with Best Practices, processes and standards.

  • Knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client/server principles.

  • Have the ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.

  • Fluency in one or more common, modern scripting languages.

  • Fluency with GNU command line tools.

Additional Job Requirements for CSP3:In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the CSP3) level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client/server principles.

  • Advise researchers on procurement of hardware resources.

  • Demonstrated experience in configuration management.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of compilers, MPI, transports and compute queues in small scale clusters.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong communication skills both, written and verbal.

  • Broad knowledge of computer and networking technologies, including development and deployment.

Desired Skills:

  • Currently hold a DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent, transferable clearance.

  • Extensive knowledge of scientific computing software and technologies.

  • Extensive experience with configuration management.

Education:

Computing Systems Professional 2 Education Required:

This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Computing Systems Professional 3Education Required:

This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
