What You Will Do
The Network Infrastructure and Engineering (NIE) Division maintains Los Alamos National Laboratory’s computer networks and institutional services and oversees LANL's cyber security programs. The Linux Business Systems team of NIE’s infrastructure Services Group provides systems administration services for the operating systems and application infrastructure that support LANL business systems. Additionally, the team provides support services for the hardware, software and tools used to operate and manage NIE’s datacenters and networks.
Computing System Professional (CSP) 2 ($72,500 - $118,200)The duties for CSP 2 level include:
Installing, configuring, and maintaining new/existing operating system instances in a virtualized infrastructure on a regular basis.
Developing and maintaining documentation that describes system installation and conﬁguration procedures.
Performing regular system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes.
Reviewing system log ﬁles, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs.
Providing system account management functions.
Providing ad hoc support as requested by DBAs and Developer staﬀ.
Investigating and troubleshooting issues and problems.
Applying OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrading administrative tools and utilities.
Conﬁguring and adding new services as necessary.
Computing Systems Professional (CSP) 3 ($87,800 - $144,800)In addition to the duties outlined above, the CSP 3 duties include:
Participating in activities that demonstrate a subject matter expertise in the areas of Linux systems administration and programming.
Performing regular security monitoring to identify possible vulnerabilities or intrusion attempts.
Contributing to the development of new methods for highly available business systems.
Partnering with managers and other senior staff to coordinate the work activities.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience as a system administrator supporting Linux/modern Unix Server operating systems in a virtualized environment.
Demonstrated experience writing in scripting languages such as Perl, Python or a modern UNIX shell languages.
Demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux Configuration Management and tools.
Demonstrated experience writing end user and administrator documentation.
Experience in computer security and authentication concepts.
Demonstrated experience working eﬀectively as a member of a team in a structured and controlled environment.
Willingness and ability to participate in an on-call coverage rotation providing 24 x 7 support for systems supported by the team.
Additional Job Requirements for (CSP 3): In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the CSP 3 level requires:
Extensive knowledge of TCP/IP and other network protocols.
Extensive knowledge of NFS, and ﬁle transfers protocols.
Demonstrated experience drawing on a wide range of experience using professional concepts to solve complex issues in a creative and effective ways.
Demonstrated experience of modern Unix/Linux systems programming and server administration.
Demonstrated experience of modern Unix /Linux Configuration Management and use of tools similar to Puppet Enterprise.
Demonstrated experience of operating system security vulnerability issues and system security architecture.
Demonstrated experience of server availability and performance monitoring tools.
Proven ability to work as part of a team and demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to others.
Experience deploying and supporting Linux server systems on VMware and/or Oracle VM platforms.
Experience and/or training in Linux Red Hat v6 or greater operating systems.
Experience in a high availability production computing environment.
Linux OS certification.
Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, design, document, lead and implement complex technical projects.
Demonstrated ability to utilize Enterprise Architecture tools to aide in requirements gathering, designing solutions, and process management.
Demonstrated ability to mentor team members in areas of expertise or administrative methods.
Current DOE Q Clearance.
Computing Systems Professional 2 Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Computing Systems Professional 3 position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
