What You Will Do
The Criticality Safety Manager is responsible for high-level management of technical, programmatic, and operational leadership of the Criticality Safety Division. The Criticality Safety Manager will advise Laboratory Management on impacts/changes to national criticality safety standards and regulations, and provide strong collaboration with LANL Programs, Facility Operations, Engineering/Technical Authority and Projects. The Criticality Safety Manager will own the Criticality Safety Program and oversee development of criticality safety documentation for non-reactor nuclear facilities and critical experiments. The selected candidate will direct the administration of nuclear criticality safety employees including, forecasting staffing requirements, addressing affirmative action placement goals, directing assignments, monitoring performance, participating in the performance appraisal and salary management process, and financial management.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated ability to manage a technically complex organization
Demonstrated understanding of DOE Order 420.1C and ANS 8 Standards pertaining to Criticality Safety
Demonstrated ability to oversee a criticality safety program in assessing and developing appropriate responses to upset events involving the compromise or suspected compromise of criticality safety limits
Must have in-depth knowledge and proficiency in DOE and industry standards on criticality safety
Demonstrated ability to interface with external agencies such as the Department of Energy (DOE}, Department of
Transportation (DOT), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) for criticality safety
Must have excellent written/oral communication to include presentation skills
Significant Management experience
- Experience preparing, reviewing and approving highly technical Criticality Safety Evaluation Documents (CSEDs) for a complex nuclear facility
- Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (Master's degree highly desirable)

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The Criticality Safety Manager leads the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) organization in development of criticality safety technical proposals, criticality safety evaluations, and project cost/schedule documentation. Advises, assists, and represents Laboratory Management to both internal and external stakeholders on criticality safety matters. Provides technical and administrative leadership to resolve issues, including conferring with appropriate management to resolve situations where hazards are beyond acceptable levels. Develops nuclear criticality safety evaluations that meet the requirements of the appropriate national standards, governmental regulations, and organizational policies and procedures for all fissile/fissionable material operations.
