What You Will Do
The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a qualified Senior Software Engineer to participate in the execution of our portfolio of space and ground-based programs.ISR-3 is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division, and has its core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, machine learning, data systems development, and integration.
The successful candidate will work closely with a diverse group of engineers, scientists, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for both internal and external customers. Interpersonal communication and teamwork are important elements of this work environment, as is a commitment to LANL’s safety and security culture.
The successful candidate will become a member of ISR-3 and be assigned to the Data Processing Management & Products team. This team provides support for ground-based processing of spacecraft and instrument telemetry.The successful candidate will work regularly in a classified setting, and must demonstrate a strong commitment towards security. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, with good communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
Lead the development of software for automated and on-demand processing of spacecraft and instrument telemetry data
Develop scientific algorithms for processing spacecraft instrument data
Develop test suites for validating data processing software
Document software through reports and self-documenting source code
Provide support and maintenance of data processing pipelines
Work with instrument teams to develop analysis software
Present status reporting and results of work at programmatic meetings
Lead process and project planning alongside senior team members
Mentor junior team members
Contribute to internal and external funding proposals
Contribute to peer review of work of others across organizations or disciplines
Assist leadership in scheduling commitments and resources
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience with Unix/Linux Operating System
Experience with one of the following version control systems: SVN, git, or mercurial
Experience with software development using high-level languages (Python, C, C++, etc.) in a team environment using revision control tools (SVN, GIT, etc.)
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment
Demonstrated experience in project management skills, including planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout and leading software development projects
Effective written and oral communication skills
Experience with development/maintenance of data processing pipelines
8+ years professional experience (or equivalent combination of advanced degree and professional experience)
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (see below)
Desired Job Requirements:
Experience with satellite sensors and programs
Experience developing scientific algorithms, esp. related to spacecraft
Experience working with sensitive or classified information
Experience with programming using one of the following programming languages: IDL, Java, or Fortran
Experience with SQL
Active “Q” Clearance
Education : M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar engineering degree required. Degree from an ABET accredited college or university is desired.
