Los Alamos National Laboratory Earth and Environmental Sciences Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division (EES) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for an outstanding candidate for a postdoc position. The postdoc will participate in a combination of experimental research and development, implementation, testing, and the development and application of numerical tools for simulations of fluid flow in porous and fractured media. Part of the research will focus on experiments and simulations of water and vapor transport in an underground salt repository, in support of research pertaining to nuclear waste disposal. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to participate in the design, execution, and modeling of thermally-driven fluid transport experiments for national security applications of interest to the EES Division and collaborative research groups. The position is expected to involve roughly equal percentages of experimentation and computational work, including participation in on-going experiments in the underground at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, NM. The successful applicant should have a strong publication record and will be expected to publish scientific findings in high impact peer-reviewed journals and high visibility national project reports. Additionally, the candidate will present scientific results at both national and international conferences and project meetings. Finally, the position will require project documentation adhering to defined quality assurance protocols.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience in design, implementation, and analysis of fluid flow experiments in porous and/or fractured media.
Demonstrated ability and experience in developing, modifying, and debugging large computational science software with preference given to candidates with experience in flow and transport in porous media software
Strong background in geochemistry, experimentation, earth science data analysis and/or subsurface flow and transport simulation. Some combination of these is preferred.
Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and the cover letter.
Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary scientific environment.
Existing knowledge or willingness to understand energy, environmental, and national security applications.
Ability to obtain a Q clearance which typically requires U.S. Citizenship.
Programming experience with Python, Fortran, Java, C/C++, R, and/or MatLab.
High-performance computing experience.
Demonstrated record of writing proposals.
Demonstrated experience writing annual project reports that synthesize results of a large national or international project.
Education: A Ph.D. in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Earth Science, Computational Science, Civil or Chemical Engineering or related field. The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within five years of completion of the Ph.D. Candidates may also have previous experience including postdoctoral experience.
