What You Will Do_

ISR-4 is looking for highly motivated early career electrical engineers to assist in the development of custom instrumentation for various space-based detection systems. We are looking for electrical engineers with interest in digital design, analog design, power supply design or RF design.

R&D; Engineer 1 ($80,100 - $131,000)

_Responsibilities include:


  • Specification, design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of electrical circuits or FPGAs.

  • Assist in the development of custom instrumentation for various space-based detection systems.

R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800 – $144,800)

_In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D; Engineer 3 will be required to:


  • Take initiative and provide technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical assemblies.

  • Work independently with a broader scope than an R&D; Engineer 1.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

This position will be filled at either the Electrical Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills & experience of the selected candidate.

  • Demonstrated coursework and advanced studies in one or more of the following electrical engineering focus areas:

  • Digital Design

  • Synchronous design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of FPGA or other digital circuits

  • VHDL or Verilog

  • Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design

  • Digital circuit card design

  • RF/Microwave

  • RF/microwave components and their system applications (amplifiers, receivers, synthesizers)

  • Fabrication and packaging for RF/microwave circuits and systems

  • Transmission lines, impedance matching, and signal integrity

  • Analog Design

  • Fundamentals of analog components

  • Signal conditioning of electronic sensors

  • High speed analog to digital conversion

  • Power Supply Design

  • Linear regulators as well as switch mode power DC/DC converters

  • Power supply filtering, switching devices, protection and gate drives

  • Power supply control theory, analysis, and testing.

  • Demonstrated experience with advanced design & analysis tools, such as schematic capture tools, analog or digital simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, and/or printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools

  • Demonstrated experience with advanced system design and data analysis tools, such as Matlab

  • Good oral, written and presentation communication skills

  • Experience working in a team environment

  • This position requires a Q clearance. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

  • Bachelors of Science degree from an ABET accredited college or university in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or similar field. Advanced degree preferred.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of configuration management and formal verification methods

  • Experience with space-flight hardware development and testing methods desirable.

  • Experience debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes

  • Knowledge of digital communication systems and/or other digital signal processing

  • Knowledge of high speed digital interfaces

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. ISR-4 is a space electronics and signal processing group that specializes in space based radiation measurement and basic science missions. ISR has been developing, building, and operating space based systems for over 50 years. In addition the group develops electronics for terrestrial and airborne scientific and national security applications along with the requisite ground support and test equipment. The group’s projects receive funding and requirements from various government agencies including the DOE, DOD, and NASA. Projects are executed through a close interaction between all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment. Projects within ISR division are developed from concept to operational support after launch or field deployment.
