What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900 – $148,300)
The successful candidate will:
Perform electrical engineering functions such as circuit design, prototype development, component and assembly testing and analysis, and debugging/troubleshooting.
Demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn and develop skills across the EE field in areas that may be lacking.
Help to field experiments, collect and analyze data, and coordinate related activities.
Work interactively with technical staff, designers, and technicians to ensure successful and timely completion of project tasks.
Must be willing to partake in hands-on work and to occasionally work extended hours including travel.
Work will potentially include related hazards such as high voltage, RF, magnetic fields, radiation work, pressure/vacuum, and other lab-based experimental hazards. The person must understand and adhere to policy governing such work, and be comfortable in a laboratory or field test environment.
R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900 – $165,100)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be required to:
Lead the research, design, testing, analysis, and verification/validation of novel electrical engineering R&D.
Provide technical peer review, contribute ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities, and enhance the development of junior staff through mentorship and training.
Develop advanced concepts, solving complicated technical challenges requiring expertise spanning the electrical engineering disciplines, and experience working externally with broader scientific and engineering disciplines to successfully execute.
Perform as part of a team or independently with emphasis on self-initiative and technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical, optical, and/or electromechanical assemblies.
Help to establish safety/security boundaries and ensure project staff remain within those boundaries throughout a project cycle.

Minimum Job Requirements:
R&D Engineer 2
Demonstrated aptitude in two or more of the focus areas listed below through either coursework and advanced studies, or previous experience in the following:
Power Systems/Power Electronics and Power Supply Design
Pulsed Power and Electromagnetics
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Time and Frequency Domain Acquisition (Oscilloscopes, Network Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer, TDR) and Analysis Techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with advanced design & analysis tools, such as analog simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, schematic capture, printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools such as ADS/Genesys, REMCOM/CST/COMSOL, or Mentor Graphics/Altium.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with advanced system design and data analysis tools, such as Matlab.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team with emphasis on self-initiative and technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical, optical and/or electromechanical assemblies.
Experience debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes, including fault analysis.
Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.
R&D Engineer 3
In addition to the requirements outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 must:
Demonstrated, applied expertise in three or more of the focus areas listed below through either coursework and advanced studies, or previous experience in the following: o Analog Design o Power Systems/Power Electronics and Power Supply Design o Pulsed Power and Electromagnetics o RF/Microwave o Embedded Systems
Demonstrated ability and experience leading teams of junior staff conducting related work.
Ability to identify, promote, develop and grow Laboratory technical capabilities.
Experience providing technical peer review.
Active Q/SCI clearance
Laboratory experience with pulsed power and HV systems
Experience writing C or C++ code
Experience with digital communication systems and communication theory
Experience with automated test and data acquisition software (LabView or other)
Experience with free-field and fiber optic system design, diode and fiber lasers, and diode laser driver design and optimization
Knowledge of digital design, embedded systems, digital signal processing and FPGAs
Knowledge of high speed digital layout techniques
Knowledge of IPC/IEC standards governing PCBs and Pick and Place board population techniques
Knowledge of 3D CAD software (Solidworks/Creo)
Knowledge of mechanical fabrication techniques (CNC milling, 3D Printing, injection molding, etc)
Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited college or university program in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or similar engineering discipline) and at least 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The R&D Engineer 3 position requires a degree from an ABET accredited college or university program with at least 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree is preferred at the R&D Engineer 3 level.
