As a member of J-8, theEngineered Systems Tec 4/5 will provide electrical and mechanical support for the installation and upgrades to fabrication equipment to include manual and CNC machining equipment, hydraulic presses and other general shop equipment. Specifically, the Engineered Systems Tec will work in a team environment supporting the design and installation of equipment within a High Explosives (HE) fabrication environment. This will include operations, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and upgrades to standard and custom fabrication equipment.
Roles and responsibilities include:
Engineered Systems Tec 4 ($60,400-$95,900)
The successful candidate will be required to:
Working from electrical schematics and mechanical drawings to install custom equipment within an HE environment
Troubleshoot machine installations to validate proper machine operations
Aid in defining facility modifications necessary to support new equipment installations
Working on equipment used for fabrication of hazardous materials, typically high explosives.
Acquire and maintain pertinent certifications and qualifications to support installation and maintenance of equipment.
Occasional overtime may be required.
Engineered Systems Tec 5 ($72,500-$118,200)In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:
Design custom electrical and mechanical systems to support HE machining operations
Work with group ESO to ensure electrical safety throughout entire facility
Support the maintenance team in the repair of existing equipment
Aid in developing specifications for vendor supplied custom equipment
Train and mentor other employees.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Extensive knowledge and experience working safely with electrical equipment powered by 480VAC and 208VAC facility power.
Demonstrated experience fabricating, assembling, and testing electronic/electrical systems.
Demonstrated experience fabricating, assembling, and testing mechanical systems.
Demonstrated experience performing installation, maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment and systems.
Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and repair equipment at the system level in the field and at component level in the laboratory using a variety of electronics bench instrumentation, such as digital oscilloscopes, DVMs, pulse generators, etc.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills with a strong ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 5:In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Special Materials Machinist 5level requires:
Demonstrated ability to read and create schematics with Autocad or similar program.
Advanced knowledge and experience designing electronic/electrical systems.
Advanced knowledge and experience designing mechanical systems.
Advanced knowledge and experience in maintaining system and process documentation.
Ability to be a technical leader within the organization, including training and mentoring other employees.
LANL Electrical Safety Officer qualified
Experience operating fabrication equipment including mills, lathes, saws and grinders
Experience working in a facility supporting equipment that fabricates hazardous materials
Experience in the maintenance of manual and CNC equipment
Programming experience with PLCs or LabVIEW
Active DOE Q Clearance or DOD Top Secret Clearance.
Engineered Systems Tec 4 Education Required:Position typically requires a high school diploma and four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.
Engineered Systems Tec 5 Education Required:Position typically requires a high school diploma and a minimum six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

J Division operates the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility, and also operates or utilizes other LANL firing sites and facilities.
