What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Cognizant System Engineer 3 (Engineer 3) ($87,800 - $144,800)
The successful candidate will be expected to independently perform the following duties of this position in the areas of electrical, instrumentation and control, mechanical, structural/civil, or fire protection:
Supporting configuration management
Defining and controlling system modification
Implementing the authorization basis
Maintaining the technical baseline
Monitoring, tracking, and trending of major systems
Defining maintenance requirements
Performing root cause analysis
Preparing corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations
Performing engineered equivalency analysis
Providing field implementation of the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program.
Cognizant System Engineer 4 (Engineer 4) ($105,600 - $178,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, as an expert within the assigned organization, the primary duties of this position include:
Building CSE capability around Vital Safety Systems Assessments (VSSA) and System Health Reporting (SHR)
Serving as a key advisor to deployed engineers
Leading, developing, reviewing, and integrating deployed CSE activities.
Mentoring junior engineering staff
Providing expert advice and consultation to Facility Engineering and Engineering Services management related to deployed staff needs
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Cognizant System Engineer 3 (Engineer 3)
Demonstrated expert technical experience in design engineering or system engineering for nuclear or industrial facility operations
Expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods
Knowledge/experience with engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies
Demonstrated experience to include design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance
Demonstrated expert experience working with industry codes and standards
Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally
Cognizant System Engineer 4 (Engineer 4) (In addition to those of the Engineer 3 above):
Expert knowledge in Conduct of Maintenance and Conduct of Engineering implementation.
Demonstrated experience as a senior technical advisor overseeing and assessing Vital Safety Systems.
Extensive experience in the identification of nuclear and high-hazard facility system aging and degradation
Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory and DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to System Engineering and Vital Safety Systems such as DOE 0 420.1 B, and DOE STD-1073
Proven ability to build capability for CSEs in performing Vital Safety System assessments and preparing System Health Reports
Understanding of and experience working with Performance Based Indicators
Ability to achieve results in a matrix organization
Proven ability to integrate and coordinate multi-facility deployed, cross-functional technical work activities
Experience with mentoring/coaching other engineers
Minimum 15 years of related experience
Education:Bachelor of Science in engineering from ABET accredited college and minimum 10 years of related experience for the Engineer 3 and 15 years of related experience for the Engineer 4.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting research into new defense programs.
