What You Will Do

This selected candidate will support management of the deployed ES-55 design team as one of the TA-55 Design Team First Line Manager (FLM). The FLM reports daily to the ES-55 Modification Manager and is deployed from the Engineering Services Division Engineering Project Delivery group. The TA-55 Design Team First Line Manager (FLM) is responsible for the execution of all design project work related to programmatic, maintenance, and capital projects within the TA-55 Protective Area.

Specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • Ensure that technical deliverables comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and standards.

  • Ensure design engineers assigned to different projects are adequately trained.

  • Ensure that all technical deliverables are developed in accordance with LANL institutional policies and procedures, Engineering Services Division engineering standards, and the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) policies and procedures.

  • Participate in the management of the assigned design packages and direction of employees to include forecasting staffing requirements, developing and executing action-oriented programs to address affirmative action placement goals, directing assignments, assuring training and development, monitoring performance, and initiating personnel actions.

  • Ensure that safety processes, policies, and practices are followed adequately to ensure worker safety.

  • Facilitate communication and consensus among various customers and stakeholders.

  • Supervise and monitor the daily and long-term work activities of employees who provide technical support for all engineering discipline design and drafting.

  • Ensure design configuration management through formal design revision, nonconformance resolution, and accurate as-built design documents.

  • Ensure the project meets operating requirements as stated in the input criteria documents (i.e., Functions/Requirements) by ensuring completeness and consistency at acceptance and by developing design output in accordance with the technical, cost, and schedule baselines

  • Ensure that the project is monitored for compliance with safety and security requirements.

  • Monitor the design project team for compliance to scope, budget and schedule

  • Manage technical drafting activities to ensure group/division goals and deliverables are met.

  • Lead design project teams in executing strategy and objectives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert technical knowledge and experience in design and review of both nuclear and non-nuclear systems and configuration management.

  • Extensive experience in facility based design and construction projects.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to include reports and presentations.

  • Extensive experience and knowledge of the application of International Building Codes (IBC) and International Existing Building Codes (IEBC) alteration levels as they apply to facility modifications.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with safety basis and criticality safety requirements to properly incorporate into design deliverables and control changes to design which may affect these requirements by actively interfacing with the DARs and SB/CS personnel.

  • Professional experience with process design change implementation, as well as technical leadership in direction/goal setting, and developing technical bases for financial planning.

  • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, engineering procedures, project controls, and design criteria in all engineering disciplines.

  • Knowledge/Understanding of DOE STD 1189 requirements for new facilities and major modifications.

  • Experience in implementation of a quality assurance program, such as DOE O414.1D.

  • Demonstrated capability in successfully managing customer relationships, ability to partner with internal and external stakeholders to identify as well as resolve drafting/design issues.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience within all engineering disciplines and drafting being supervised.

  • Expert knowledge of design project decision-making authority.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and manage the design, scope, schedule and budget for group projects, practices, processes, standards, procedures and methods.

  • Knowledge of 2D CAD platforms (AutoCAD)

  • Knowledge of 3D CAD platforms (Revit, Solidworks, Inventor)

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in identifying problems, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions affecting technical programs and administration.

  • Skill in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports.


  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

  • Requires at least 8 years of experience in an engineering, design and CADD discipline.

  • Requires at least 3-4 years of supervisory experience in an engineering, design and CADD discipline.

Desired Skills:

  • In depth knowledge of LANL policies and procedure including established goals and objectives as required by Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and Engineering Standards Manual (ESM).

  • Proficient with NQA-1 level of quality rigor

  • Registration as a professional engineer.

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • Expert knowledge performing BIM, Pro E modeling and interface with fabrication and/or machine shops.
