Los Alamos National Laboratory Explosives Engineer (R&D Engineer 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Explosives Engineer (R&D; Engineer 1) will be primarily responsible for assisting in the design, planning, and execution of high-explosive experiments at the Nevada National Security Site. Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Determine proper diagnostics to be used for data acquisition

  • Troubleshoot problems with instrumentation in data acquisition and high-voltage environments

  • Prepare experiment-specific proLANcedures

  • Assist Lead Experimenter at experimental firing sites

  • Present data both verbally and in writing to customers and sponsors

  • In addition, the Explosives Engineer (R&D; Engineer 1) will perform precision optical and/or mechanical alignment of assemblies and precision mechanical and electrical measurements while preparing experiments

This position will be located at the NNSS and requires living in the Las Vegas, Nevada area.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Primary/Minimum Requirements for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Working knowledge of high-explosives and applicable regulations in the R&D; engineering field

  • Knowledge of and experience in data acquisition software and data interpretation

  • Knowledge of and experience in utilizing data acquisition systems in an experimental environment

  • Knowledge of and experience in obtaining noise-free dynamic diagnostic data from measurement systems

  • Knowledge of and experience in delivering product on schedule while working on multiple projects with shifting priorities

  • Demonstrated experience in creative problem solving

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers including strong teaming skills

  • Demonstrated experience working independently without direction

  • Experience with diagnostic instruments including lasers, oscilloscopes, digitizers, delay generators, pressure sensors, and microcontrollers

  • The ability to obtain a “Q” Clearance

Desired Skills:

  • Design software experience (e.g. Solidworks, Autocad, PSpice, Creo?, etc.)

  • Data acquisition/analysis software experience (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica, LabVIEW, etc.)

  • Familiarity with safe handling methods for experimentation with high-explosives and/or working with high-voltage systems

  • Knowledge of DOE Standard 1212 (formerly the DOE Explosives Safety Manual)

  • An active or reinstatable “Q” Clearance

Education: Position requires a bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university and a minimum of two years of related experience.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. Under the LANL Weapons Engineering and Experiments organizations, the LANL Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division addresses national security challenges by executing mission-driven, large-scale, integrated experiments, emphasizing sub-critical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, focused experiments, and tests of engineered systems. The Division develops the workforce, facilities, technologies, and systems necessary to generate, analyze, and disseminate unique, high-quality data with integrity and scientific excellence. J Division utilizes professional engineering management, and Formality of Operations and Conduct of Engineering processes, to effectively integrate high-fidelity test objects, multiple diagnostic technologies, sophisticated experiment design, and multi-disciplinary teams assembled across organizational boundaries. The Division executes its responsibilities in a sustainable, safe, secure, reliable, and environmentally responsible manner. J Division operates the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility, and also operates or utilizes other LANL firing sites and facilities. The Division collaborates to execute sub-critical and other integrated experiments at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and NNSA, DOE, and partner organization facilities as needed.

Within J Division, J-NV is the NNSS organization responsible for preparation, fielding, and execution of dynamic high explosive related experiments including sub-critical dynamic experiments involving special nuclear material for the LANL Weapons program as well as other national security customers. J-NV is also responsible for much of the planning and infrastructure required for a given experiment or series of experiments which may include setup and testing of diagnostics for data collection and analysis, and safety, and security aspects of the work. J-NV is responsible for integrating with other NNSS organizations and experimenters traveling from the Laboratory location in Los Alamos New Mexico and reports to the J Division Leader under the Associate Director for Weapon Engineering & Experiments.
