Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
The Fire Protection Division (FP-DO) is the Laboratory’s central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab’s nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. Fire Protection serves as LANL's authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire protection-related codes, standards, and recommended practices.
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Fire Protection Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Fire Protection Engineer 3 ($87,800 - $144,800)
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but duties are not necessarily limited to: Providing fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to the laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations; preparing and maintaining fire hazard analyses and related documentation for complex laboratory, radiological, and nuclear facilities; construction project support, plan review and approval; Lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance; wildland fire risk reduction initiatives; performing facility fire protection and life safety system assessments; fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing and maintenance oversight; preparation of equivalencies and exemptions, development of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes; and technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The application of fire protection engineering concepts, building construction, NFPA) codes and standards (especially NFPA 1, 13, 14, 17, 20, 25, 30, 45, 72, 96A, 101, 801 and 2001), International Building and Fire Codes (IBC/IFC), and ES&H; requirements associated with fire protection program implementation.
The application of FM Global and/or other industrial property loss prevention data sheets, and NRTL listings/approvals used in the commercial built environment.
Performing fire protection and life safety plan reviews of new construction and facility modifications, negotiating with project leaders, programmatic/user organizations and design agencies to achieve successful resolution of outstanding fire protection and life safety issues, performing construction inspection and approval, and observing and documenting facility and fire protection and life safety system/feature commissioning.
Understanding and validating regulatory compliance for facility plans (blueprints), drawings and related design documentation (e.g., hydraulic calculations, fire alarm system battery calculations, clean agent design calculations, through-penetration firestop system engineering judgements, etc.).
Performing life safety (e.g., means of egress capacity, occupant loading, etc.) and fire protection system design calculations (water supply/fire flow calculations, water-based system hydraulic calculations, fire pump performance curves, fire alarm system voltage drop calculations, etc.).
Performing fire protection and life safety assessments and evaluations of proposed new and existing facilities.
Preparation and maintenance of fire hazards analyses for complex industrial, radiological and nuclear facilities. Similar experience preparing commercial insurance carrier inspection reports is relevant.
Performing computer fire modeling using industry standard fire modeling software packages, including an understanding of appropriate uses and limitations of these techniques.
Ability to work within any 24 hour period, including rotations on-call and as part of the Laboratory’s emergency management organization.
Excellent communication skills (verbal - written)
Knowledge of office software, including MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
- BS in Fire Protection Engineering, or BS in related Engineering discipline and fire protection engineering experience.
Fire Protection Engineer 4 ($105,600 - $178,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the primary duties of this position include: Establishing, sustaining and monitoring fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs (Lab-wide and within facilities); facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance program implementation; mentoring and technical leadership of staff; interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals; and maintaining Laboratory fire protection engineering and maintenance standards. This position requires working with all levels of Laboratory management and representing the Division and Laboratory to internal customers, external agencies and community organizations. As a senior level position, the candidate will review, recommend actions and provide leadership on fire protection and loss prevention related issues for the Laboratory.

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Fire Protection Engineer 4 level requires experience with:
Demonstrated leadership aptitude including clear focus on customer service, as well as, regulatory compliance.
Providing technical direction and mentoring to fire protection professional staff members for the purposes of completing organizational-defined responsibilities and tasks, staff skill set development, and assisting with setting priorities on and improving the quality of technical deliverables.
Representing a fire protection/life safety organization on cross-discipline safety and operations teams for the purposes of improving facility operations and safety, including participation on authorization basis document development teams, multi-discipline facility assessment teams, and in support of facility/operational readiness reviews.
Critically evaluating fire protection needs and concerns in varied areas of research and development environments to solve complex problems through compromise when necessary and appropriate.
Professional Engineering (PE) registration. PE licensure in Fire Protection Engineering with 8-15 years of Fire Protection Engineering experience.
MS in Fire Protection Engineering.
Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard and nuclear facilities.
Development and maintenance of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, NFPA and building codes and standards, and technical standards.
Experience with fire department operations, including the preparation and management of fire department baseline needs assessment (BNA) documents and recommendations, staffing requirements (e.g., NFPA 1710), apparatus life-cycle planning and routine interface and coordination between Federal and municipal regulatory agencies.
