What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The job responsibilities of each level are outlined below and will be assigned according to the level assessed during candidate selection.

The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR‐3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking qualified Scientist to participate in the execution of our portfolio of space and ground based programs.

Ground Support software aspects of the program areas involve some of the following general types of work. This work may be in support of mid to high (application) level software development:

Scientist 1 ($81,600 - $133,400)

  • Develop ground support equipment systems and corresponding software used for command/control and data collection to test payloads during various stages of payload development, payload verification, payload test and integration to the host satellite system.

  • Develop ground-based command/control/data collection systems and corresponding software used to command payloads and collect, display and archive telemetry data as received from various antenna sites (local and remote).

  • Provide technical and operational support throughout payload development, payload test and integration, host satellite factory test and integration and on-orbit planning and real time operations.

  • Interface with end users, principle scientists, principle engineers and fellow colleagues to understand payload requirements, deliverables and time-frames, coordinate resources, plan, track, and execute project plans.

  • Interface with sponsors, external stakeholders, satellite factory engineering & test staff to assist in developing plans for payload delivery, test and operations.

  • Assist with proposals of hardware/software solutions and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the proposals

  • Contribute to continuous software process improvement

  • Assist in the development of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and other system level requirements

  • Extract and define software requirements from system level requirements

  • Enhance technical and professional expertise through training

Scientist 2 ($89,900 - $148,300)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 2 responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the development of progress reports for the project leaders, sponsors, and assist with defining project plans and milestones

  • Present results of work at programmatic meetings

  • Contribute to peer review of others’ work across organizations or disciplines

  • Provide leadership and help mentor other team members

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and experience in one or more of the following electrical, computer engineering or computer science focus areas:

  • Web-based Applications Development

  • TCP, UDP socket interfaces

  • Scientific data acquisition and display development

  • Technical skills for integration, test and debug of hardware/software interfaces

  • System Administration

  • Computer Processor Architectures and Design

  • C/C++ experience

  • Python experience

  • Perl and/or Bash scripting experience

  • Graphical User Interface development experience

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (see below)

In addition to the job requirements above, qualification of the Scientist 2 requires:

  • Experience with software configuration management / version control (e.g., Git/GitHub, Subversion, etc.)

  • Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring other team members.

  • Five years of experience in developing and testing software for a scientific community.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in formal software development processes

  • Experience with the development, deployment and operation of sensors

  • Experience with laboratory and/or field use of instruments

  • Experience with satellite sensors and programs

  • Experience in large data‐set management and exploitation

  • Unix/Linux experience

  • PyQt experience

  • Experience estimating task completion effort

  • Experience designing or working on a small, medium, or large project

  • Active "Q" Clearance

Education: Minimum BS degree in computer science or related discipline is required. Higher-level degree is desired.

Additional Details:

It is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of complex systems in secure and open environments in support of data acquisition and telemetry systems, large-scale data storage and archival, embedded systems, real-time control systems, computer-aided design, scientific programming and computing, high-performance computing, reconfigurable computing, machine learning, data exploitation, data product delivery, and distributed sensor networks.
