Los Alamos National Laboratory Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do_
As part of the Engineering Technology and Design (E) Division management team, the selected candidate will provide technical leadership and management for the Weapons Test Engineering Group (E-14). The group is responsible for a wide range of test activities including weapon component, subsystem and full-up system level engineering testing, material level testing, and a variety of non-weapon related test activities. Specific work scope includes facility management, project management, experimental test design, hardware design and analysis, fabrication/assembly for small component level to full-scale integrated tests. Weapons test activities will include collaborations with W and Q Divisions (Weapon System Engineering), and Joint Test Operations with Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and the US Navy and Air Force. These activities include testing that is performed in a variety of onsite and offsite facilities and locations including: DARHT, the Nevada Test Site, Tonopah test range, and Navy and Air Force flight-test ranges.
The Group leader will participate in and foster a team environment with engineers and scientists within LANL, other DOE facilities, and the DoD. Successful implementation of experimental design and execution necessitate establishing experimental test plans, technical procedures, experimental objectives and requirements, definition of test environments, and establishing instrumentation requirements. Specific test environments include but are not limited to shock, blast, vibration, rotational, impact, modal, thermal, and fire. Performance of job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, high explosives, and other hazardous materials.
The E-14 Group Leader will report to the E Division Leader. The responsibilities for this position include:
Maintenance and revitalization of LANL engineering test facilities
Development of experimental testing technologies and equipment
Technical and administrative oversight of resources, cost, and schedule
Collaborate with group and division managers, and across divisional lines, in the areas of operational planning, strategic planning, program implementation, communications, and execution of projects and deliverables
Champion quality assurance, conduct of operations, high explosives safety, project management, and other aspects of integrated management
Planning, developing and managing the group’s capabilities, resources and budget
Conduct performance appraisals, salary management, recruiting, staffing, employee development, and addressing/resolving personnel issues
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Fundamental knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. Stockpile.
Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following: nuclear weapon (or equivalent complex system) design, development, qualification, and certification.
Demonstrated experience of successful execution of complex system/component related tests and experiments.
Demonstrated experience working and delivering product on schedule, while involved in multiple projects having various priorities.
Demonstrated capability in program development, advocacy, and strategic planning.
Demonstrated ability to make effective and timely decisions and application of sound business practices.
Demonstrated record of excellent leadership, resource management, personnel development, conflict resolution, mentoring capabilities, supervision and integration of personnel into high performing /cross-organizational teams with the ability to solve complex problems.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and internal/external customers.
Demonstrated professional-level experience of practices related to working with high explosives, special nuclear materials, classified components and nondestructive diagnostics and techniques.
Working knowledge of Quality Assurance and Conduct of Operations requirements.
Knowledge of hardware and experimental design methodologies.
Knowledge of fundamental principles and extensive experimental work obtaining data from measurement systems involving one or more of the following response types: acceleration, strain, displacement, pressure and temperature.
Working knowledge of classified and radioactive parts management.
Active Q clearance.

Work Environment:Position involves working around and possibly handling radioactive materials, explosives and beryllium.
Education:Minimum requirement is a BS in science or engineering. MS or PhD in Mechanical, Nuclear, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a closely related technical field preferred.
