Los Alamos National Laboratory Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do_
Reporting to the J Division Leader, the J-2 Group Leader will be responsible for leading the engineering, technical, and administrative functions for the Group. The Dynamic Structure Design and Engineering Group is a new group within the Integrated Weapons Experiment Division (J Division). This new group will be the institutional design authority for impulsively-loaded structures (e.g., confinement vessels, blast houses, etc.) for use at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).
The Group Leader will be responsible for ensuring the following:
Development of engineering standards for impulsively-loaded containment vessels and structures.
Procurement of containment vessels and structures, port covers, and associated hardware and materials.
Development and implementation of modeling tools to predict potential insults to vessels and other blast structures.
Development and fielding of diagnostics to quantify the "health" of confinement vessels and structures.
Analysis of diagnostic data and repairs to determine if a vessel or structure is able to be returned to service, downgraded, or retired.
Review and approval (in concert with institutional quality and materials subject matter experts) of vessel repair techniques and welding certifications.
Maintenance of records vessel and structure to capture its use history and repair history, etc.
Effective research and development activities to expand the options for confinement vessels and structures (e.g., alternate materials, shapes, configurations).
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in engineering design, testing and analysis, preferably with a focus in pressure systems.
Demonstrated experience in the use and application of consensus standards.
Proven record of managing complex projects, to include technical experts, stakeholders, third-party vendors, and quality assurance.
Record of success in management in a scientific or technical organization, including performance and salary management, strategic and business planning, organization and staff development, and successful recruitment of technical staff in a dynamic and changing environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.
Advanced knowledge of and proven ability in effective decision-making and creative problem solving.
Demonstrated record of excellent fiscal management to include managing $5M+ portfolios and multiple-type funding sources.
Experience in design and certification of pressure containing devices or structures.
Experience in following and certifying structures or systems against an ASME code.
Familiarity with LANL operational and administrative policies and procedures.
Education Required:Minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering.

Where You Will Work_
Located in northern New Mexico, LANL is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting research into new defense programs. It is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.
The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division conducts experiments to generate high-quality data necessary to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear stockpile and to support global security.
The Division fields, diagnoses, and conducts subcritical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, and focused high-explosive experiments at local firing sites and at the Nevada National Security Site. J Division also operates the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility, the nation’s premier hydrodynamic testing resource.
The Division works with the NNSS, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, the Department of Energy, and other partners to enhance the capabilities necessary to certify and ensure the safe, secure, and reliable performance of nuclear weapons’ components, materials, and systems.
