Los Alamos National Laboratory High Energy Density Physics Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The P-24 Plasma Physics Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking exceptional candidate applications for postdoctoral research in the field of high-energy-density physics (HEDP), inertial confinement fusion (ICF), and discovery plasma science. Los Alamos National Laboratory is a world leader in HEDP, ICF, and basic plasma science, with P-24 conducting a broad-ranging program of research for NNSA/DOE defense and science programs, on large and small scale experimental facilities, including the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the OMEGA laser facility at the University of Rochester, the Texas Petawatt Laser, the Jupiter Laser Facility at LLNL, and other facilities around the world. Current research being conducted in HED, ICF and discovery plasma physics includes implosion physics, hydrodynamics and instabilities, mix and burn, magnetized and turbulent HED plasmas, warm dense matter, radiation transport, laser-plasma interactions, and x-ray and nuclear diagnostics.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in experimental plasma physics or a very closely related discipline, as evidenced by at least one first-author paper submitted to or published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Sound academic training in fundamental plasma physics.
Some research experience in a laboratory plasma-physics environment.
Demonstrated ability to communicate both technically and interpersonally both orally and in writing.
Education: A Ph.D. in experimental plasma physics or very closely related discipline, earned within the last five years.
Familiarity with approaches and challenges of HEDP and ICF
Familiarity with plasma diagnostics, such as imaging, spectroscopy, interferometry, or nuclear measurements.
Experience using laser or pulsed-power driver facilities to conduct ICF or HED experiments.
Willingness to travel to perform experiments and participate in conferences.
Experience with data analysis using software tools such as IDL or Matlab.
