What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 /3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Exciting opportunities exist in the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). This R&D Engineer 2 will collaborate to facilitate continuous improvement initiatives based upon Lean Sigma principles with the operational teams in the Detonator Production Division. Primary work scope will be in support of the High Explosive Detonator Fabrication (DET-1), Inert Component Fabrication Group (DET-2), and the Detonator Operations (DET-3) teams responsible for the fabrication, inspection, and testing of War Reserve experimental detonator components and subcomponents. The selected candidate will be expected to develop solutions to problems, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates utilizing using the Lean Sigma principles and best practices.

R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900.00 – 148,300.00)

  • Work without considerable direction

  • Lead cross functional teams implementing Lean Six Sigma activities across all of the ALDWP to ensure they are effective.

  • Be a continuous improvement advocate and should be capable of coaching, and mentoring all levels ALDWP on lean sigma principles into their day to day activities.

  • Provide guidance to management and leadership on operational, safety, and process issues with a focus on opportunities for improvement.

  • Demonstrated experience in 3D modeling, simulation, and animation for site planning, room layout/work flow and equipment configurations/operations.

  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities, creation/application of the tools, defining the educational curriculum and setting the long term strategy around continuous improvement.

  • Work with planning and product teams to review production schedules, process flows, and quality inspections to understand opportunities to minimize waste, reduce process variation, and increase yield.

  • Facilitate Value Stream mapping events focused on layout of equipment/room, materials, and workspace to increase production efficiencies, maximize quality and minimize costs.

  • Work in partnership with process engineers and technicians to facilitate activities for collecting baseline data, managing metrics, and setting targets.

  • Create standard work, processes, and tools across the DET organization.

R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900.00 – 165,100.00)

  • Able to lead and drive large projects with minimal direction

  • Lead cross functional teams implementing Lean Six Sigma activities across all of the ALDWP to ensure they are effective.

  • Be a continuous improvement leader and be capable of coaching, and mentoring all levels ALDWP on lean sigma principles into their day to day activities.

  • Provide guidance and strategic initiatives to management and leadership on operational, safety, and process issues with a focus on opportunities for improvement.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Five or more years of work experience in an engineering discipline, such as mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or nuclear engineering

  • Demonstrated ability to provide goal setting, technical leadership/direction and ability to meet schedules.

  • Demonstrated extensive data analytical skills and proven competence in anticipating, identifying, researching, and resolving complex issues.

  • Proven experience applying engineering principles, methods, and tools to complex problems

  • Project management leadership and direction on continuous improvement project teams.

  • Track record of fostering and creating a culture of continuous improvement across all levels of the organization.

  • Working proficiency with direct or parametric engineering modeling software (e.g., CREO, SolidWorks, ANSYS, AutoCAD)

  • Demonstrated excellence in negotiating, influencing, conflict resolution, consensus building, oral presentations, and written communication.

  • Extensive experience organizing complex, multi-tasked projects through prioritization and teaming with others.

  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation.

  • Proficient in Creo, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, Minitab, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3

  • Seven or more years of work experience in an engineering discipline, such as mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or nuclear engineering

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in goal setting, technical leadership/direction and ability to meet schedules.

  • Demonstrated extensive data analytical skills and proven competence in anticipating, identifying, researching, and resolving complex issues.

Desired Skills:

  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt Certification

  • Knowledge of the United States nuclear weapons programs, designs, and engineering

  • Working knowledge of governmental or commercial quality assurance standards

  • Experience with component or product inspection tools/processes

  • Proficiency in statistical based software.

  • Demonstrated record of production excellence through the successful implementation of engineering designs or processes without escapes in safety, security, or quality

  • Experience leading others including providing direction and goal setting for team members

  • Active or reinstatable Department of Energy “Q” clearance

Education (R&D Engineer 2): This position requires a Bachelor’s degree (with a Masters preferred) in an engineering(degree from an ABET accredited college or university desired), such as mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, metallurgy, materials science, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or nuclear engineering.
