What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Engineered System Tec 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Designer/Drafter 4 ($60,400 - $95,900)The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Provide mechanical design support for the design, fabrication, procurement, and testing of components for the LANSCE accelerator complex.

  • Design of a wide variety of accelerator equipment and systems; including vacuum chambers, magnets, electro-mechanical diagnostic devices, support and alignment structures, and associated equipment for the acceleration and transport of particle beams.

  • Operate with a degree of independence, and must exercise personal initiative in successfully completing assigned tasks.

  • Handle all aspects of the design and drafting process, from sketches and layouts to generation of three-dimensional models and production of mechanical drawings suitable for use in fabrication efforts. Many components must operate remotely in vacuum and are subject to harsh radiation environments.

  • Work in fabrication shops or in accelerator radiation areas to successfully perform some aspects of the job.

  • Provide archive and data management and support for accelerator operations and new projects.

Designer/Drafter 5 ($72,500 - $118,200)In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:

  • Possess expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design and high-level 3D parametric CAD systems. Proficient knowledge of second CAD system.

  • Be able to work with complex mathematical formulas and computations.

  • Have an expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Have an expert knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities within designated discipline.

  • Have proven experience in the quality checking of other designers drawings in accordance with ASME 14.5 M.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Possess expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design and high-level 3D parametric CAD systems. Proficient knowledge of second CAD system.

  • Be able to work with complex mathematical formulas and computations.

  • Have an expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Have an expert knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities within designated discipline.

  • Have proven experience in the quality checking of other designers drawings in accordance with ASME 14.5 M.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated professional drafting and design experience in one or more of the Mechanical Engineering Design and Technology Team’s areas of responsibility; which includes vacuum design, accelerator structure design, RF drive systems, water cooling systems, beam line layout, Beam Target, and accelerator diagnostic device design.

  • Demonstrated ability to check design drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5M and provide constructive feedback to junior designers.

  • Expert knowledge of ASME Y14.5M and ability to apply Geometric Design and Tolerancing principles to designs.

  • Experience with Product Data Management tools such as PDM Professional or EPDM Works or PTC Windchill.

  • Demonstrated acceptance of responsibilities and flexibility in working on multiple tasks for multiple customers and meeting customer deadlines and requirements.

  • Formal training and/or equivalent experience in the use of the Solid Works CAD system.

  • Formal training and/or equivalent experience in the use of CREO CAD system.

  • Experience with CNC manufacturing and inspection techniques and procedures.

Education:

Designer/Drafter 4:Associates degree in electromechanical /mechanical technology or equivalentor equivalent, with four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Designer/Drafter 5:Associates degree in electromechanical /mechanical technology or equivalentor equivalent, with six-to-ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Functions:Peripheral vision, depth perception, reading vision, distance vision, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting the trunk or back, reaching overhead, reaching horizontally, reaching down.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology – Mechanical Design Engineering (AOT‐MDE) Group provides expertise, operational support, and technical leadership in accelerator mechanical engineering and computer‐aided design. AOT‐MDE’s primary focus is the design, and implementation of mechanical accelerator related hardware including: RF accelerating cavities, electromagnets, high power target design, mechanical beam diagnostics, vacuum systems, de-ionized water systems, metrology and ion sources for the LANSCE User Facility. AOT’s secondary focus is to share its expertise and experience with organizations within the Laboratory as well as external partners and sponsors. Along these lines, AOT‐MDE has worked on R&D; 100 award-winning projects utilizing its knowledge base while incorporating cutting edge technology. Additionally, the group fosters and participates in worldwide collaborations, workshops, and conferences in the interest of exploring and pushing the frontiers in RF structures, diagnostic instrumentation, and accelerator target technology.
