What You Will Do
Working in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Engineering Technology and Design (E) Division, the selected applicant will be expected to use their extensive knowledge of mechanical design to solve problems for an interesting, diverse and complex array of projects.
The selected applicant will perform the following duties in this position:
Use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to capture complex mechanical engineering designs.
Generate complete design packages for complex mechanical assemblies\systems and resolve design package issues.
Independently define design requirements and obtain customer approvals.
Review group design standards and propose improvements.
Define modeling structure for large, complex design projects.
Apply engineering design principles to design and fabricate complex and/or non-standard components and assemblies.
Perform complex calculations in support of unique mechanical design solutions.
Determine budget and schedule information.
Determine fabrication, construction, operation, and maintenance requirements for project
Access nuclear facilities in support of design work.
Perform quality assurance functions related to mechanical hardware.
Serve as a mentor of early career staff and mentor students on mechanical design.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated expert ability to assemble complete design packages for complex mechanical assemblies\systems.
Expert use of either SolidWorks or Creo CAD software packages to generate models and drawings for complex mechanical designs.
Proficient knowledge of a second CAD software package (SolidWorks or Creo).
Demonstrated expert ability to lead a small team on a technical design effort.
Demonstrated ability (expert level) to work independently with minimal supervision and to work with coworkers with different technical backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability (expert level) to express ideas clearly in oral and written presentations and reports.
Experience designing for additive manufacturing.
Faro or other Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) inspection and scanning tool expertise.
Experience working in a nuclear facility.
An active Department of Energy Q clearance.
Education : At a minimum, a relevant associate’s degree and six years of related experience, or a high school diploma and 15 years of related experience.
