What You Will Do

MARIE-DIV is seeking an undergraduate mechanical engineering student looking for a summer internship and/or internship during the academic year with an interest in design practices, Computer Aided Design (CAD), project management, and related research. MARIE-DIV is working to complete the conceptual design of a facility to dynamically control matter and materials under extreme conditions. This currently requires research and interpretation of existing similar designs, organization of information created by other staff members, and developing new design concepts for a future facility. While working, the student will improve their CAD skills, learn the process of project completion, obtain hands on engineering experience usually not covered in most engineering undergraduate curriculums such as applications of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and gain team experience working with a diverse set of students and staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Coursework in two or more of thefollowing engineering focus areas: o Materials Science o Mechanics of Materials o Thermodynamics o Statics/Dynamics

  • Experience with some form of computerprogramming or computerized engineering design tools

  • Full-time enrollment in an accrediteddegree program with a 3.0 (out of 4.0) cumulative GPA for undergrads

Desired Skills:

  • Computer programming in support ofengineering design, data acquisition, analysis or machine learning;

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and FiniteElement Analysis (FEA) experience;

  • Laboratory or shop experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safety;

  • Good written and verbal communication in a professional scientific context; providing examples or references best

The MARIE-DIV organization is leading the effort towards design and eventual construction of a world-class experimental facility for dynamic mesoscalematerials science capability. The Matter-Radiation Interactions in Extremes (MaRIE) project is a major strategic effort at Los Alamos National Laboratory. You will be part of a growing team situated at the Los Alamos NeutronScience Center (LANSCE) working on the project.
