Los Alamos National Laboratory Metrologist (Process & Sampling Technician 4/5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Process & Sampling Technician 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level

Join the Standards and Calibration Laboratory (S&CL;) and support the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s mission to solve national security challenges through measurement science excellence. The S&CL; provides National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibrations for LANL programs, operations, and research organizations that use measurement and test equipment (M&TE;) to take high impact and high consequence measurements. The S&CL; performs dimensional, electrical, and physical calibrations. We strive to provide the highest quality calibrations and exceptional customer service to ensure high impact measurements at LANL are reliable and accurate whether the measurement is taken in a test tube on a laboratory bench top or on a firing mound during an explosives experiment. Providing this service requires a dedicated and committed team with a common goal – to safely support LANL’s mission by providing superior calibration services to our customers.

Process & Sampling Technician 4 ($60,400 – $95,900)

The successful candidate will:

  • Calibrate customer M&TE;

  • Maintain S&CL; measurement standards

  • Develop/revise calibration procedures

  • Calculate defensible measurement uncertainties

  • Accurately document calibration results

  • Occasionally perform calibration work in radiologically controlled and/or high explosives areas

Process & Sampling Technician 5 ($72,500-$118,200)

In addition to the above, the successful candidate will:

  • Develop and revise complex automated and manual calibration procedures

  • Calculate complex and defensible measurement uncertainties

  • Support calibration instrumentation control charting

  • Perform proficiency tests and inter-laboratory comparison tests in support of accreditation

  • Provide measurement consultation to S&CL; customers.

  • Support the engineering team to maintain existing calibration instrumentation and recommending opportunities for improvement

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience performing the set-up, calibration, measurement uncertainty calculation, and reporting results for Physical measurement equipment

  • Demonstrated experience in developing calibration or measurement techniques for new or one-of-a-kind instruments, equipment, or systems

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying fundamental math, physics, and problem solving principals to technical problems

  • Demonstrated experience adhering to technical and administrative procedures

  • Experience with the use of databases and spreadsheets to manage data and perform measurement uncertainty calculations.

  • Experience maintaining Physical primary and/or secondary standards or instrumentation

  • Proven ability to perform work independently with routine oversight and meet tight schedules through time management skills and to organize and prioritize tasks for effective accomplishment of project goals

  • Proven ability to work in a tight-knit team environment, interface with onsite customers at all job levels, and interface with instrumentation vendors and manufacturers.

  • Demonstrated effective verbal presentation and written communication skills

Additional Job Requirements for Process and Sampling Tech 5In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Process & Sampling Technician 5 requires:

  • Advanced ability to understand and interpret physical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics

  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring and interpreting measurement standards and instrumentation trends as well as providing recommendations based interpretation of the observed trends

  • Demonstrated ability to develop complex calibration and/or measurement techniques for new or one-of-a-kind instruments, equipment, and/or systems based on research and using engineering principles

  • Demonstrated experience developing defensible measurement uncertainties using scientific principles to incorporate all contributing factors

  • Ability to determine Test Uncertainty Ratios (TURs) and apply guard banding as appropriate

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal oversight

  • Ability to train less experienced personnel in a wide variety of calibration areas

Desired Skills

  • Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" Clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship

  • Proven use and programming experience of calibration automation software such as LabView, Compass, MetTeam, etc.

Process and Sampling Technician 4

  • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in an engineering, science, or mathematics-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Process and Sampling Technician 5

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering, science, or mathematics-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
