Location Los Alamos, NM, US

Organization Name P-23/Neutron Science & Technology

What You Will Do

We are looking for postdoctoral candidates to work with the National Security Sciences (NSS) Team on development of next-generation scintillators for use in x-ray and gamma-ray detection. This work is part of a project that uses machine learning techniques to guide new scintillator material synthesis, coupled with detailed measurements of scintillator performance, to develop a next-generation radiographic imaging system. The successful candidate will be expected to join this multi-disciplinary project and concentrate on scintillator characterization using optical, thermal, and radiation excitation of the materials.

NSS team efforts in applied physics include current and future experimental work needed to understand the physics and physical conditions seen in systems relevant to stockpile stewardship and certification, as well as re-analysis and interpretation of data from past experiments. One of the thrusts of the team is in performing dynamic experiments utilizing elementary particle probes (e.g. neutrons, gamma-rays) from pulsed sources to help understand the complex interplay of fundamental physics and material properties under extreme conditions. We have a diverse set of experiments at locations around the country including the Naval Research Laboratory and the Nevada National Security Site, so some travel will be required.

While the successful postdoctoral applicant will aid in this effort in characterizing the material’s scintillation properties, this work can include simulations of detector performance, and evaluation of optimal radiographic systems. There may be additional opportunities for collaborative work with scientists on the NSS Team or from other groups or divisions at LANL.

Highly skilled applicants will be considered for Director's or Agnew National Security Postdoctoral Fellowships with exceptional candidates being considered for the prestigious Hoffman, Feynman, Oppenheimer, or Reines Fellowships.

The LANL Postdoctoral Program is a pipeline for hiring technical staff at the Laboratory, many of whom first joined LANL as postdocs. The Laboratory encourages its postdoc mentors to help their postdocs explore possibilities for conversion to a permanent staff position.
