What You Will Do
The Systems Design and Analysis Group (NEN-5) is seeking a Scientist 2 to work in the area of nuclear system design, ranging from development of computational methodologies, simulations of nuclear reactors, and/or systems analyses related to nuclear security. Depending on the specific skill set of the selected candidate, there will be opportunities to work in one or more of the following areas:
Solve important and challenging radiation transport and reactor safety problems for a variety of applications.
Develop and apply tools for high‐fidelity simulations of reactor cores.
Perform high‐fidelity computational modeling for a range of phenomena including neutronics, thermal hydraulics, nuclear fuel performance and/or other thermo‐mechanical processes.
Analyze reactor designs, including analysis of issues related to neutronics, structural mechanics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and safety.
Perform integrated systems analyses related to nuclear security.
Assess international and domestic safeguards approaches for all steps in the nuclear fuel cycle.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Perform high quality modeling and/or simulations in a nuclear-related field within the group.
Document and/or present technical work clearly and effectively.
Undertake domestic travel as periodically required based on programmatic needs.
There are opportunities for technically advanced work performed here to be published in journals or conference proceedings.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience in modeling and simulations related to one or more of the following disciplines: nuclear science or engineering, radiation transport calculations, reactor depletion simulations, computational thermal, solid, and fluid modeling, nuclear fuels and/or materials, nuclear chemistry, process modeling, nonproliferation, or related research areas.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Experience developing and reviewing technical presentations and publishingin one or more of the following areas: nuclear science or engineering, physics, mechanical engineering or other closely related technical field of study.
Demonstrated ability to team as well as work independently, and to produce work that demonstrates quality, technical excellence, innovation, and creativity.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and create detailed action plans.
Ability to obtain aDOE Q clearance.
Demonstrated experience in one or more areas of nuclear science or engineering:
Nuclear systems, reactor design, and/or high‐fidelity reactor simulations.
Modeling and simulation tools for radiation transport, depletion, fuel performance, systems, and/or CFD modeling.
Lower length scale phenomenological modeling.
Familiarity with nuclear fuel cycles and their vulnerabilities to diversion and theft.
Familiarity with nuclear security concepts.
Demonstrated experience in one or more of these computational areas:
Experience in modeling and simulation using radiation transport codes (MCNP), burn (or depletion) codes, and/or fuel performance codes (MOOSE/BISON).
Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics and/or nuclear thermal hydraulics codes.
Facility with parallel computing with visualization and processing of large scientific datasets.
Ability to program and knowledge of programming languages such as Python, Perl, C++, and/or Fortran.
Advanced programming skills and experience linking simulation tool
Active DOE Q clearance.
Education: Master’s degree and 3-5 years of experience or a Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field of study from an accredited university.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division is a focal point for the Laboratory’s nuclear engineering and nonproliferation work in support of international security. Within NEN‐Division, the Systems Design and Analysis Group (NEN‐5) maintains strong capabilities and recognized expertise in (1) radiation transport code development and modeling for global security applications, (2) methods development and applications for high‐fidelity simulations of reactor cores and nuclear fuel, (3) design and demonstration of special‐purpose reactor concepts for space and terrestrial applications, (4) integrated decision support, risk assessment, and strategic planning for systems related to Global Nuclear Security, and (5) knowledge of nuclear fuel cycles and analytical skills to develop novel solutions to nuclear security challenges.
