Los Alamos National Laboratory Oracle Database Team Leader (Solutions Architect 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do_
This position will be filled at either the Solution Architect 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
This is a working team leader position requiring demonstrated management skill sets as well as expert level Oracle database administration experience.
The selected candidate will be the team leader for the Oracle Database Administration (ODA) team. This team is one of three database teams within the Software and Applications Engineering Division (SAE), Enterprise Applications and Database Services Group (SAE-1). This group provides Database, Middleware, Reporting, Application Security and Application administration for LANL’s enterprise-wide systems. The ODA team supports all of the SAE-1 managed Oracle databases, with the exception of the ERP system and its related applications. The ODA team manages 135 databases supporting numerous applications and enterprise services. These systems support core business services, manufacturing, nuclear waste processing, data warehousing, training, facilities management, etc. This team is involved in the entire software lifecycle of the systems they support.
Solutions Architect 3 ($96,600 – $161,300)This position requires an experienced manager with a deep understanding of the Oracle Database Administration field plus working knowledge of other related IT fields, such as software engineering, Linux system administration, networking and security.
Solutions Architect 4 ($116,900 – $197,000)
To be considered for this level, candidate will be considered an expert in the Oracle Database Administration field. Their experience with and knowledge of related fields will be broader and have more depth, providing the foundation to design, implement and resolve issues within more complex systems.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the selected candidate will:
Provide technical leadership for the Oracle Database Administration Team that manages SAE hosted Oracle databases supporting LANL critical business systems.
Serve as a principal architect of many large and complex database solutions.
Supervise and oversee team efforts that assess application requirements and design/implement Oracle database solutions to meet those requirements.
Lead a team of Oracle Database Administrators with responsibilities that include oversight of project documentation, work planning and coordination, security compliance, database hardening, performance optimization, database patching, maintenance and upgrades.
Lead and oversee training, budget, schedule, and resource planning for your team member’s projects.
Contribute to the development and/or implementation of new technical standards and methods.
Participate as a member of the SAE leadership team and provide support to Group Leaders in personnel and budget management, customer relationship management, safety and security.
Utilize industry concepts and best practices, combined with organizational objectives in order to anticipate and resolve complex issues as they arise. This will include situations where that analysis requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

This position requires Q clearance access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.
Demonstrated expert level technical knowledge and experience installing, managing, administering, patching, upgrading, and securing production Oracle 12c databases for enterprise applications that run on Linux including RAC and HA configurations.
In depth experience providing full lifecycle support of 12c Oracle database servers, including completing full version upgrades, performance optimization, and implementing some aspects of a defense in depth posture for systems managed.
Demonstrated experience doing WebLogic Server integration and using intermediate Linux system administration skill sets.
Demonstrated experience leveraging NFS and ASM storage to deliver Oracle database solutions.
Demonstrated leadership abilities with strong interpersonal skills to include the ability to be solutions oriented, understand people's strengths, and weaknesses in order to facilitate their professional growth, and to drive continual process improvement.
Ability to identify problem areas, investigate alternative solutions, determine cost implications, and recommend solutions.
Demonstrated experience collaborating with systems analysts, developers, and system administrators to design Oracle database technical solutions that meet enterprise business data requirements.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and project management skills.
Effective interpersonal communications and teaming skills, including the ability to translate technical terms to layperson's terms and present them to audiences outside of technical organizations.
Additional Job Requirements for Solutions Architect 4: In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Solutions Architect 4 level requires:
Demonstrated ability to develop solutions for complex problems that span multiple disciplines, including hardware, database administrations, software development, systems administration, data management, security, networking or related disciplines.
Demonstrated experience using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c and/or 13c for Oracle database monitoring and automation of recurring management tasks.
Demonstrated ability to build and develop a cohesive and collaborative team that shares knowledge and actively participates in mentoring and developing more junior team members.
Demonstrated experience in identifying, implementing, documenting, and automating best practices in Oracle database administration combined with the ability to build consensus within a team for the adoption of those solutions based on real data, metrics, and analysis.
Demonstrated skill in defining and collecting metrics to measure project progression.
Experience with Data warehousing using Oracle databases.
Experience implementing other database solutions including: MSSQL, MySQL, Amazon RDS, MongoDB, Amazon DynamoDB or Cassandra.
Experience running Oracle database solutions on Oracle VM or VMware.
Demonstrated experience successfully tuning large, complex Oracle database solutions.
Experience with Oracle Advanced Security Options.
Experience with security related products for Oracle databases such as Oracle Audit Vault, Key Vault, Privileged Account Management (PAM) tools, etc.
Hands on experience patching all components of Oracle Exadata engineered systems and managing and tuning Oracle databases on those systems.
Experience effectively leading technical teams, allocating and prioritizing resources, directing staff to successfully achieve organizational goals and objectives.
Solutions Architect 3 Education Required:
Position typically requires 10 to 15+ years of related experience. At this level post-graduate coursework may be desirable.
Solutions Architect 4 Education Required:
Position typically requires 15 to 20+ years of related experience. At this level post-graduate coursework may be expected.
