What You Will Do

The Plasma Theory and Application Group (XCP-6) in the Computational Physics (XCP)Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opening for a scientist in theoretical and computational plasma physics specializing in modeling and design of novel ICF/HED concepts.

The successful candidate will play a role in identifying important physics challenges in developing thermonuclear burning platforms and contribute to team-based activities resolving these challenges. Areas of particular interest are: inertial confinement fusion; high energy density physics; turbulence and/or perturbed plasma flows;laser-plasma instabilities; kinetic plasmas; algorithm and model development for plasma and high energy density science. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with LANL physicists,experimentalists, target fabrication, and numerical methods experts, as well a swith scientists at other laboratories and universities. This research may lead to the design, fielding,and analysis of experiments at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) OMEGA,and National Ignition Facility (NIF) lasers or on the Z machine pulsed power facility. The successful candidate will be expected to continue fundamental or applied research in his/her areas of specialization as well as to support the national-security programs and mission of the Laboratory.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in at least one area of plasma physics as evidenced by talks and/or publications on work accomplished.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both written and orally, interpersonal and to large audiences.

  • Self-starter;demonstrated initiative for continuous learning and development in area of expertise.

Desired Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to experimental designs while working closely with designers, experimentalists and target fabrication staff (effectively work as part of a team).

  • Experience running large, parallel codes in a high-performance, Unix computing environment.

  • Experience building interdisciplinary collaborations and leading experimental teams.

  • Experience with large-scale projects to solve national technology challenges.

  • Familiarity with the NNSA National Laboratories’ mission and research environment.

  • Expertise in numerical methods, methods analysis or computational physics; some code development in support of HED experiments is desirable.

  • Basic knowledge of nuclear weapon physics.

  • Active or re-instateable Q clearance.

Education: Master's degree and experience in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Machine Learning or a closely related discipline; PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Machine Learning, or related field preferred. Postdoctoral research experience is preferred
