What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The R&D Engineer 3/ 4 reports to the Assembly Group (PT-3) First Line Manager. Leads an extensive and diverse set of activities across multiple engineering disciplines, highly specialized field in support of engineering research and development (R&D). Is a skilled professional with expertise crossing several technical areas or depth in a particular area is required. Serves as a technical leader in one or more discipline areas.

Product Engineer 3 – Mechanical, Chemical or Materials ($96,600 - $161,300)

  • Directs the disassembly and analysis of pits in support of the national surveillance mission and supports process engineers in the manufacture of new pits

  • The successful candidate will interface daily with the design agency, quality assurance organizations, program management, and others.

  • Will serve as a technical lead integrating various manufacturing, characterization, and testing processes applicable to pit surveillance and pit manufacturing.

  • The successful candidate will utilize his/her high level of plutonium knowledge; high level understanding of manufacturing processes; strong background in mechanical, chemical, or materials engineering to report on the state of pits in the stockpile or prepare documentation supporting the sale of new pits.

Product Engineer 4 – Mechanical, Chemical or Materials ($116,900 - $197,000)

  • In addition to the duties outlined for the Product Engineer 3, the Product Engineer 4 duties are as follows:

  • Lead integrated project teams (IPT) for assigned programs.

  • Primary interface for engineering and continuous improvement with both the program office and product manager for assigned programs.

  • Responsible for coordina ti ng with stakeholder organizations to validate development plans and schedules for assigned programs. This role will involve integration with other Design and Production agencies and sponsors across the nuclear security enterprise.

  • Integrates development and surveillance schedules with production activities for assigned programs across multiple internal organizations and subject matter experts in Materials Science, Chemistry, Nondestructive Evaluation, and other organizations.

  • Integrates sourcing on nun‐nuclear components from vendors inside and outside the nuclear security enterprise.

  • Responsible for coordinating and integrating surveillance with operations costs and schedules for assigned programs, including road mapping new project to identify least conflict with existing projects or enhance capability in existing projects.

  • Responsible for monitoring and tracking development progress for assigned programs.

  • Responsible for reporting development progress and status to the program office and customers for assigned programs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge and proven experience in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering, quality engineering, or mechanical engineering.

  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience in process variable/product quality relationships.

  • Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing and characterization projects.

  • Demonstrated record of written communication that includes procedure development, internal reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, procedure development, or research analysis.

  • Thorough Knowledge and demonstrated experience with metal working processes such as welding, machining, forming, and non-destructive analysis.

  • Thorough Knowledge and demonstrated experience in manufacturing and quality documentation, e.g. preparing travelers or production plans, qualification of processes, preparing sales packages, etc.

  • DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4:

  • In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D engineer 4 level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge and proven experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering.

  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects and/or providing leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing new technical capabilities and leading technical decision‐making.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of general weapons manufacturing.

  • Advanced experience in preparing and reviewing engineering designs.

  • Advancedexperience scheduling and developing budgets for activities and managing progress on those activities.

  • Advanced experience maintaining detailed records of work using standard computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.

  • Advanced record and proven success in effectively communicating orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels (e.g. technicians, process owners, product/quality/design engineers, project managers, management, and federal sponsors).

Desired Skills

  • Experience in project development, reporting, and presentation to management and sponsors.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in manufacturing process development.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in materials characterization techniques, including metallography, SEM/EPMA, FTIR, Auger, XPS, etc.

  • Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry Techniques.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in metallurgical processing of actinides, especially plutonium and its alloys and compounds.

  • Knowledge of Weapons Quality requirements, e.g. NAP-24, DPBPS, etc.

  • Experience with configuration management principles and practices.

  • Experience in NNSA product realization processes.

  • Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.

Education For the R&D Engineer 3: Typical educational requirement is an advanced degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.

Education For the R&D Engineer 4: Typical educational requirement is an advanced degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.
