What You Will Do
Come join our team! This position is based in the Institutional Quality (IQPA-IQ) group and reports to the IQPA-IQ group leader. The IQ mission is to integrate quality requirements into processes, validate that policies and programs meet regulatory and customer requirements and expectations, and develop/manage electronic systems to support the IQPA division institutional programs.
Individuals at this level have broad expertise or unique knowledge and use these skills to contribute to development of objectives and principles to achieve goals in creative and effective ways. Candidates for this position are viewed as knowledgeable in the field, work on significant/unique/complex issues, and provide solutions through data driven analytical techniques where appropriate.
The Quality Engineer 2 will be responsible for assisting effective implementation of the Laboratory’s quality assurance program in nuclear, radiological and non-nuclear facilities. Typical responsibilities include:
Serve as a quality point-of-contact while interacting with management and personnel on a regular basis to support effective implementation of the quality program
Provide technical guidance and initiative in identifying areas to which quality assurance practices may be introduced or enhanced
Defines and monitors performance metrics and reports that measure QA program and/or process performance
Lead or support efforts in management of M&TE, maintenance of QA Program documents, procedure development and reviews, procurements, material traceability and control and special projects as assigned
Lead or support causal analyses, corrective action development and implementation, and quality improvement efforts as assigned
Perform duties of a Nonconformance Report Coordinator including the tracking, reporting and fostering timely closure of open nonconformance reports
The selected candidate will create or use formal networks involving coordination among groups and other key decision makers. Regular contacts with other resources internal and external to the IQPA-IQ organization are also typical to successfully execute responsibilities. The individual works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Assignments are often self-initiated.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of quality assurance and control programs
Knowledge of quality assurance regulatory, contractual, and technical documents, i.e. DOE O 414.1D, 10 CFR Part 830 Subpart A, and NQA-1-2008 and 2009 Addenda Extensive experience reviewing procedures and other documents to verify quality requirements have been adequately addressed and flowed down as necessary
Demonstrated ability using engineering principles and concepts, to include reading blueprints and understanding tolerances
Knowledge of and demonstrated ability using quality improvement methodologies such as causal analysis methods, establishing and monitoring performance metrics, corrective action plan development, and performing effectiveness evaluations
Demonstrated ability to perform strategic thinking for development and/or implementation of institutional programs and initiatives
Experience planning, leading, and performing quality assessments, surveillances and/or audits
Demonstrated skill in leading growth and change, driving for results, and building productive and sustainable internal and external collaborations.
Record of effective two-way written and oral communications skills, as evidenced by internal and external interactions, including briefings, presentations, publications, and meetings to workers through upper management
Strong interpersonal, communications, and team building skills
Demonstrated knowledge and experience using statistics and statistical methods to analyze issues, identify failure modes, make decisions, implement corrective actions, and verify effectiveness
Nationally recognized quality engineering related certification such as American Society of Quality’s Certified Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, or equivalent
Knowledge of project management methodologies and applying quality requirements to projects being managed through a formal project management process
Knowledge of various business systems and functional organizations across the Laboratory, how they are related, and the ability to apply quality requirements across these organizations in a consistent, integrated manner
Knowledge and experience in software quality assurance including NQA-1 Part I and Subpart 2.7 as well as safety software requirements per DOE O 414.1D Attachment 4
Knowledge and experience in commercial grade dedication of items including NQA-1 Part I and Subpart 2.14.
Education: This position typicallyrequires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

for access to classified matter.

The Institutional Quality and Performance Assurance-Institutional Quality Group (IQPA-IQ) performs procurement document reviews, inspections, assessments, and/or evaluations to provide assurance certain procured items and services meet LANL requirements. The Quality Engineer will assist in ensuring appropriate quality requirements are described in procurement documents, provide quality oversight, and provide assistance to other deployed quality staff.
