What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Quantum Group (Q) at LANL is seeking an Electrical R&D Engineer to work on several projects in the Quantum Communication System (QCS) Team. This team works develops software and hardware technology to address the Nation’s need for quantum-enhanced communications.
R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900 – $148,300)
The successful candidate will:
Perform electrical engineering functions such as circuit design, prototype development, component and assembly testing and analysis, and debugging/troubleshooting of quantum-based information systems.
Field experiments, collect and analyze data, and coordinate related activities.
Work interactively with technical staff, designers, and technicians to ensure successful and timely completion of project tasks.
R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900 – $165,100)
In addition to the duties listed above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be expected to:
Plan and direct engineering tasks necessary for projects.
Assume technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating the work.
Develop intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights, and/or patents.
Provide mentoring and training to early career staff and technicians
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge of and experience withtime and frequency domain data acquisition (oscilloscopes, network analyzer, signal generators, spectrum analyzer, TDR) and data analysis expertise.
Knowledge of and experience with advanced system design and data analysis tools, such as Matlab and LabVIEW.
Experience with and the ability to guide others utilizing design & analysis tools, such as simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, schematic capture, printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools
Develops written technical products such as journal papers and reports.
Contributes to the completion of milestones on multiple projects.
In addition to the Job Requirements listed above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 3 level requires:
Extensive knowledge and thoroughly documented experience with above requirements
Experience in leading, mentoring, and training technical staff
Demonstrated experience successfully managing technical projects
Expertise in many of the following areas:
Experience with FPGA development
High speed analog to digital conversion
Some combination of experience with optical systems (electronics, sensors, focal plane arrays, cameras, lasers, and instrumentation)
Design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of digital circuits and digital communication systems/digital signal processing
Debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes, including fault analysis
Field collection and data analysis for measurements from kHz to Ghz
Optical components and their system applications
Fabrication and packaging for optical fiber and electronics systems
SCADA control hardware, software, and algorithms
R&D Engineer 2 Education Required : Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline. Advanced degree is highly desired.
R&D Engineer 3 Education Required: Advanced degreefrom an ABET accredited engineering college or university program in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
