Los Alamos National Laboratory Quantum Materials Systems (QMS) Thrust Scientist (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (MPA-CINT) invites outstanding candidates to join CINT as a scientist in the Quantum Materials Systems (QMS) Thrust. CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center (NSRC) as a national user facility, jointly operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory (Gateway in Los Alamos, NM) and Sandia National Laboratories (Core in Albuquerque, NM).
The successful candidate will perform independent research programs and user interactions related to the QMS thrust’s research themes, such as understanding and controlling quantum effects of nanoscale materials and their integration into systems spanning multiple length scales.
We will expect the selected candidate to make original contributions to the development of their own projects/user programs and the strategic directions for the QMS thrust. The selected candidate has the opportunity to interact with sponsors for fundamental and applied research programs.
Scientist 2 ($87,800-$144,800)
The successful candidate will:
- Carry out a vigorous program of scientific research and support CINT user science in the area of quantum materials science, in general
Scientist 3 ($96,600-$161,300) In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:
Contribute substantially to setting the strategic directions for the QMS Thrust
Interact with a broad set of sponsors beyond BES who may benefit from CINT advances in areas ranging from national security to applied energy programs
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience performing high-impact research in the areas of quantum materials and systems
Record of scientific research achievements (publications, citations, presentations, intellectual properties) in the areas of quantum materials and systems
Experience developing a new experimental capability
Outstanding verbal and writing skills and a record of effective technical communication
Experience in the peer review of publications
Ph.D. in a relevant area of quantum materials and systems
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3 level: In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requires:
Experience leading research as a principal investigator
Experience supervising technical support personnel and/or research group
Experience developing collaborative research projects
Recognized national reputation as evidenced by invited presentations and services on scientific societal committees at national level
Demonstrated broad knowledge of techniques in nanoscience
Experience working with or at a national user facility
Experience working with laboratory environmental safety and health practitioners
Experience mentoring students or postdocs
Experience with proposal writing
Familiarity with DOE-BES
The ability to obtain a DOE “Q” level clearance, which usually requires US citizenship
Education Requirement: A Ph.D. in a relevant field of science or engineering.
