What You Will Do_

Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks candidates for a postdoctoral position in space plasma physics with the Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1). The candidate chosen for this position will be expected to focus on the topic of radiation belt modeling and comparison to data. The specific project will depend on the skills and interests of the candidate selected, but could include event case studies using the LANL DREAM3D diffusion model, comparative studies of the effects of different wave modes on trapped electrons, or incorporation of global effects of nonlinear wave-particle interactions into DREAM3D.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to interact with Laboratory staff engaged in a broad range of observational, computational, and theoretical research in plasma physics of the terrestrial magnetosphere.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The most relevant previous experience would include:

  • Background in numerical modeling

  • Background in observational analysis

  • Background in developing and using numerical simulations on large-scale computers

  • Demonstrated ability to pursue independent research

  • Work as a member of a team

  • Strong record of publication and presentation

Education: PhD in Space Physics or appropriate similar field obtained within the last five years, or soon to be completed.

This is a two-year position with the possibility of an extension to a third year.

Candidates who have the ability to obtain a DOE “Q” clearance will have more opportunities. To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age and be a U.S. citizen.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. On the anniversary of these dates, salaries are automatically adjusted to the next higher level, e.g. PhD + 0: $73,600; PhD + 1: $75,400, etc.

The Space Science and Applications group (ISR-1) in the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division (space.lanl.gov) leads a variety of national security programs to develop and fly sensors in space to detect nuclear detonations and nuclear threat signatures around the world. ISR-1 capabilities range from mission concept to instrument development and deployment, data analysis and interpretation, and simulation and modeling. We develop and sustain our world-class workforce through vigorous, innovative research in detection technologies, planetary science, and space physics.
