Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, operating, and interpreting data from highly innovative ground-based and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Curiosity Rover, Mars Odyssey, Van Allen Probes, TWINS, and ACE, as well as the upcoming Mars 2020 Rover, IMAP mission, NACHOS hyperspectral CubeSat, and BEAMPIE rocket experiment. We also build, fly, operate, and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties.

The Space & Remote Sensing (ISR-2) group is responsible for the remote sensing research and development within the ISR Division. We are looking for early to mid-career engineers to assist in the research and development of new remote sensing capabilities and to leverage new and existing techniques for novel tools and analyses. This work includes the development of innovative remote sensing methods, novel R&D signal processing and data exploitation, application of advanced algorithms working in real-time, and unique sensor network design.

We are seeking candidates that have a strong background in physics or engineering and/or mathematics or statistics. As well as experience in computational modeling, signal processing or statistical analysis and practical technical programming. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Theoretical work in support of technical measurements

  • Numerical modeling of physical phenomenology

  • Designing and executing field tests, including instrumentation, troubleshooting, and real-time data collection

  • Integration of prototype sensors with a wide array of host platforms including but not limited to stationary ground sensor packs, small UAVs, CubeSats, and small satellites

  • Validation and calibration of prototype sensors

  • Navigation and manipulation of large data sets

  • Developing new signal processing and data analysis algorithms

  • Communicating and presenting on prototype success

Responsibilities include the specification, design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of new sensors, and analysis of the data collected. The staff member in this role will be mentored and trained for both technical and project leadership. Emphasis is on self-initiative, autonomy, continued learning, and technical leadership in a small team environment.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements:

  • Comfort and familiarity with EM theory and measurement techniques.

  • Fluency in at least one or more programming language (Python, IDL/ENVI, C).

  • Demonstrated experience with advanced analysis tools, such as MATLAB, ANYSIS, and/or CST Microwave Studio, or similar.

  • Expertise in supervised machine learning, signal/image processing, and/or statistical detection theory.

  • Demonstrated design experience and competency in RF/microwave systems, Image Processing and Analysis of time-series data.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment.

  • Experience developing and writing research grant proposals.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Q and SCI clearances, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills:

  • Background in mathematics, statistics, and design of experiment.

  • Formal project management experience.

  • Original software design experience.

  • Demonstrated comfort with LabVIEW.

  • Experience working with large datasets.

  • Previous work in machine learning.

  • Diverse experience with data visualization or animation.

  • Micro/Nano fabrication including photolithography or Electron Beam Lithography.

  • Experience with x-ray diffraction spectroscopy or Raman Spectroscopy.

Demonstration of all of the following:

  • R&D experience

  • Willingness to expand into new fields

  • Willingness to be mentored and coached

  • The ability to pick up new information quickly and independently

  • The ability to work independently, with creativity and initiative

  • The ability to manage and document one’s own schedule and funding

Education: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar field with five years of experience or a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar field with work experience.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

This job will include a mix of field experiments, office work in Los Alamos, and lab work. Projects are very collaborative and we frequently work with university partners, commercial subcontractors, and colleagues at other labs. Travel a few times a year is anticipated.
