Detailed Description "What You Will Do"

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Process Controls team supports the Engineering Technology and Design Division (E), within the Process Automation and Control Group (E-3) which is responsible for the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, process control systems, machine control systems, and safety systems used for Pu Sustainment Programs as well as a variety of additional programs throughout the Laboratory. Principal responsibilities will be to provide electrical design engineering and support of control system hardware components and software controls for newly developed data acquisition and control systems. Systems range from standalone commercial controller-based equipment to large distributed computer-based systems. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.

R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900 - $148,300)

The successful candidate will:

  • Design Instrumentation and Control Systems for programmatic and production process lines.

  • Perform electrical analysis and calculations for signals and power for R&D equipment rack designs.

  • Utilize commercial software tools to program automated operation of process equipment.

  • Interpret and understand design drawing packages.

  • Provide fabrication and troubleshooting guidance to technicians.

  • Produce materials for technical reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers.

R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900 - $165,100)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be required to:

  • Provide technical guidance in control system design techniques to junior engineers and technicians.

  • Lead the design efforts of small multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Provide schedule development, cost estimates, and project status to program offices.

  • Contribute to the development of new control system and electrical design techniques to be implemented on new projects.

Job Requirements "What You Need"

Minimum Job Requirements:

Demonstrated experience with:

  • Experience in the areas of design and implementation of signal conditioning electronics, analog and digital I/O, and software development.

  • Experience with National Instruments LabVIEW.

  • Experiences with National Instruments hardware platforms including CompactRIO, CompactDAQ, and/or PXI.

  • Experience with Ethernet industrial communications, RS485 and RS232 communications.

  • Experience and knowledge of equipment rack design, power supplies, and electrical power distribution.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.

  • Ability to obtain Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 3 level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in LabVIEW Object Oriented Development, including basic and advanced architectures, the use of queues, state machine design, event structures and event handling.

  • Experience with the design and development of Data Acquisition hardware such as National Instruments hardware, LabVIEW PXI chassis, various interface cards, oscilloscopes, and digital multi-meters.

  • Experience with LabVIEW development to include custom drivers for various equipment, FPGA development and troubleshooting.

  • Able to define, design, develop, test, debug, and maintain LabVIEW code for machine control software.

  • Experience providing technical direction to technicians, and junior engineers.

  • Project management experience including schedule development, cost estimates, and project status updates.

Desired Skills:

  • Certified LabVIEW Developer or LabVIEW Architect.

  • Experience with commercial SCADA control system packages and PLCs such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Modicon.

  • Working knowledge of Software Quality Assurance standards.

  • Experience applying agile software development practices.

  • Experience with electrical design packages (AutoCAD, ProE).

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

  • Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, safety basis interaction, design guides, standards, and administrative practices as applied to DOE non-reactor nuclear facilities.

  • DOE Q Clearance

  • Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification

  • Experience with ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
