Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D; Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Candidates are requested to apply ONLY to the posting for which they are most qualified (i.e. either the Engineer or the Scientist) but not both.

R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800 - $144,800)

The B61 Life Extension Group (Q-15) is currently responsible for technical and programmatic oversight of matters pertaining to the B61 Life Extension Program (LEP). The selected candidate will serve as a Technical Lead within the B61 Life Extension Group.

R&D; Engineer 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)

The main responsibility of this position is providing technical support for B61-12 LEP qualification testing and B61-12 product realization. Position activities typically include: 1) serving as lead system engineer for local and joint test experiments, 2) providing engineering expertise and resolving technical and programmatic issues associated with assigned tests, and 3) interfacing with peers at design agency laboratories, production agency laboratories, Department of Defense (DoD), the United States Air Force (USAF) and their contractors, and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following areas: shock, vibration, fluids, thermal, mechanical processes, control systems, electromagnetic radiation, electrical function, or other specific engineering areas.

  • Demonstrated analytical thinking skills, as demonstrated by experience designing and executing experiments, including the analyzation and interpretation of data.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust with external customers and stakeholders from varied disciplines and seniority.

  • Ability to travel.

Additional Required Skills for R&D; Engineer 3

  • Excellent project management skills, as demonstrated by experience overseeing and completing highly complex/high profile projects on schedule and within allocated budget.

  • Demonstrated ability to work, influence, and lead in an R&D; team environment consisting of diverse and multi-talented scientists, engineers, technicians, and operations personnel, including the demonstrated ability to successfully mentor early career staff, students, or technicians.

Desired

Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge and advanced experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.

  • Familiarity with the NNSA Phase 6.X process

  • Experience with flight, electrical, or electromagnetic radiation testing.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with hardware fabrication and deployment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with one or more of the following software types: Design (SolidWorks or CREO-2.0); Finite Element (ANSYS or ABAQUS), and/or acquisition and analysis (LabVIEW and MATLAB).

  • Active DOE Q clearance (or similar) or DOE Q clearance investigation in process.

Education for R&D; Engineer 2:A minimum of a BS in engineering from an Accreditation Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program, advanced degree is preferred.

Education for R&D; Engineer 3:A minimum of a BS in engineering from an Accreditation Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program and 5 years of experience, advanced degree is preferred.

Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) uses scientific, systems engineering, and program management disciplines to develop and improve the safety, reliability, and security of our Nation's nuclear weapon stockpile. Q is responsible for executing LANL weapon system program life-extension and alteration projects, developing emerging technologies for future stockpile needs, and responding to customer requests. The Q Division office is located at TA-3 in the NNSB, with a significant number of staff deployed at TA-16 and 22.
