What You Will Do
R&D Engineer 2 ($91,800 - $151,400)
The W88 Systems Engineering Group (W-4) is responsible for technical and programmatic oversight of the W88 Nuclear Weapon System. You will serve as a Systems Engineer within the W88 Systems Engineering Group. You will support W88 system studies, managing and directing product definition and specification maintenance, and supporting activities in support of the W88 annual assessment activities—such as surveillance data reviews and anomalous finding investigations. You will be called upon to provide engineering expertise and resolve technical and programmatic issues associated with the W88. This position will require regular interactions with other laboratories and production agencies (PA), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), and the United States Navy and their contractors. You will professionally collaborate with others throughout the group, division, laboratory and Nuclear Weapons Complex, to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues associated with the warhead while encouraging learning, teaming, mutual respect, and excellence at all levels.
R&D Engineer 3 ($110,400 - $186,300)
In addition to what was described at the R&D Engineer 2 level, at the R&D Engineer 3 level you will be expected to lead cross-organizational teams and technical activities. You also will be expected to define and execute strategic plans with team members, customers, and other stakeholders.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Previous engineering work experience is required. Basic knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. Stockpile. Direct experience or familiarity with one or more of the following:
Component fabrication and production (preferably applicable to the W88 or a related Weapon System, but not required);
Nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, and/or surveillance
Developing requirements and assuring adherence to requirements, and/or
Component or system-level surveillance (preferably applicable to the W88 or related Weapon System, but not required).
Experience with the engineering authorization system and document management systems (e.g., PDM Link). Experience with engineering design, qualification and implementation process. Familiarization with participating on a team or leading a project with clear deliverables and milestones. Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
Leadership and Communication
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of laboratory personnel including internal and external customers, as well as experience with conflict resolution. Demonstrated ability to work with nominal supervision, as well as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment, and to interact effectively with a variety of organizations.
Education and Experience
The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An advanced degree in engineering or applicable science field is preferred.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 3 level requires:
Comprehensive knowledge of systems engineering and requirements management principles and processes.
Thorough experience with product design engineering phases to include Development Engineering (Conceptual and Baseline Design) and Production Engineering.
Experience with small- and large-scale experiments, including qualification and/or hydrodynamic test activities.
Exceptional skills demonstrated in the following areas: problem solving, conflict resolution, and customer and stakeholder interactions.
Requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An advanced degree in engineering or applicable science field is preferred.
Demonstrated experience with assembly practices, modeling, or analysis tools applicable to the W88 or other weapon systems.
Ability to read and interpret engineering design drawings, and effectively apply fundamental problem analysis skills.
Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more NSE PA.
Experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management, NNSA and US Navy customers.
Project management training and/or prior experience with planning, executing, and completing complex activities within scope, schedule, and budget.
