What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The successful candidates will provide technical support as themachining process/system engineers in developing processes, improving processes, troubleshooting processes, and supporting high-value manufacturing. The selected candidates will be responsible for supporting operations as needed to maintain equipment and ensure operability of the process. They will also be responsible for identifying any process improvements and leading development activities. Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure implementation and compliance with Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, Quality, and Safety Management programs for their area.
Process Engineer 2 will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.
Contribute at a fully-functioning level to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D and Operations initiatives.
Develop new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.
Ensure programmatic objectives through the provision or project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones.
Mentor early career staff, postdocs, and students.
Independently present specific aspects of engineering assignments at project meetings.
Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.
Process Engineer 3 candidates will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be required to:
Lead the research, design, testing, analysis, verification and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
Demonstrate the ability to lead project teams of moderate size.
Apply broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles to implement sound engineering practices to achieve organizational objectives.
Review Technical Procedures to ensure work is going to be executed safely and securely and product requirements.
Serve as a member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.
Strong communication and the ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written presentations.

Minimum Job Requirements:
R&D Engineer 2 (Salary $94,100 - $155,700)
Knowledge of modern precision machining methods and proven ability to provide technical leadership for mechanical operations and testing (e.g. digital manufacturing, high tolerance precision machine design/integration, multi-component assemblies; characterization; and multi-parameter testing).
Experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical engineering; manufacturing engineering; machining engineering or other relevant fields.
Experience in designing; planning; and executing research and development R&D projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
R&D Engineer 3 (Salary $113,100 - 190,900)
Additional Minimum Job Requirements for R&D Level 3
Thorough technical knowledge of modern precision machining methods and proven ability to provide technical leadership for mechanical operations and testing (e.g. digital manufacturing, high tolerance precision machine design/integration, multi-component assemblies; characterization; and multi-parameter testing).
Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical engineering; manufacturing engineering; machining engineering or other relevant fields.
Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing; planning; and executing research and development R&D projects.
Leadership and Management
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure.
Enhance technical and professional expertise of a junior staff through active mentoring and training.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing Laboratory policies affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.
Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers. Develops intellectual property and contributes to professional societies, publications, copyrights, and external collaborations, and/or patents. May contribute to technology transfer.
Contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals.
Attains additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognitions to grow in field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations.
Existing DOE “Q” clearance (or equivalent).

Education and Experience :
R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
R&D Engineer 3: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
