What You Will Do
The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group (C-CDE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated person for the position of Research Technician 5. C-CDE is a R&D organization focused on resolving national security-related issues in nuclear stockpile stewardship, applied and basic energy sciences, threat reduction, public health, and the environment. The group's core approach involves the integrated development and application of technologies utilizing underlying scientific expertise in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Polymers, Bioscience, Explosives, Chemical Process Development, and Chemical Engineering. The highly interdisciplinary nature of this group requires scientists, engineers, and technicians who can seamlessly operate within, and transition between, traditional academic disciplines.The successful applicant will work both collaboratively and independently on multiple C-CDE projects.
Detailed Job Description:
The successful candidate is expected to assume the lead role in application, operation, and maintenance of multiple analytical instruments and capabilities, which includes the following tasks:
Follow set experimental procedures and methods
Prepare samples for analytical measurements
Operate and maintain equipment and analytical instrumentation
Troubleshoot various types of equipment and instruments
Safely handle a diverse set of hazardous materials (e.g. acids, cryogens, solvents)
Independently development new analytical methods
Contribute to work planning and work independently across multiple disciplines and teams
Solve complex sampling and sample analysis issues to serve the customer’s needs
Contribute to specification and procurement of new equipment and instruments
Independently prepare data packages and contributes directly to reports and presentations
Follow stringent Quality Assurance and Safety requirements
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles and a background in Organic Analytical Chemistry
Demonstrated experience in standard and advanced benchtop chemical techniques and laboratory procedures
Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following analytical techniques: GC, GC-MS, multi-dimensional GC
Demonstrated experience with sample extractions and clean-up for GC analysis including solid and liquid extractions and sample derivatization
Demonstrated experience in setting up, calibrating, running, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex analytical instruments described above
Demonstrated experience in applying scientific principles to method development and process improvement
Demonstrated experience in organizing, processing, analyzing, presenting, and reporting large and complex data setsusing advanced data analysis, chemometric, and presentation software tools
Proven experience in organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple concurrent projects and assignments
Demonstrated experience in effectively interacting with colleagues and customers in a team environment
Demonstrated excellent work ethic, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship)
Knowledge in environmental organic sampling and analysis
Knowledge in polymers and material separations and analysis
Knowledge in bio-analytical chemistry and metabolomics
Knowledge and experience working under formal Quality Assurance programs.
Documented record of working safely and responsibly in a scientific laboratory.
The position typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and six-to-ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A bachelor’s degree is usually preferred.
