What You Will Do
The Physics and Chemistry of Materials group (T-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for possible staff position openings in several research areas. The candidate will be expected to perform outstanding research in the field of computational physics and chemistry on problems related to the properties and dynamics of materials. T-1 staff members are experts in theory and simulation of materials using a wide range of techniques, spanning multiple length-scales, from the atomic to the continuum.
T-1 seeks to understand how basic forces operating at the atomic level manifest themselves in the properties of matter at the macroscopic level. Our goal is to provide innovative and creative solutions needed to solve technical problems across the Laboratory’s missions, including energy security, stockpile stewardship, and global threat reduction.
The candidate will be expected to lead outstanding research in developing new and improved models for the physics, chemistry and engineering used in a broad set of materials-related areas. Current activities in the group include research in atoms, molecules, solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, and explosives. This work supports a variety of Laboratory programmatic missions, including stockpile stewardship, energy security, threat reduction, and environmental science.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level._
Scientist 2 ($87,800 - $144,800)The successful candidate will:
Lead independent research in theoretical and computational modeling of properties of materials and/or plasmas
Publish research in leading scientific journals
Recruit and mentor students and postdocs
Work in a team environment to solve problems in support of Laboratory missions
Scientist 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to:_
Lead and guide inter-disciplinary teams, possibly encompassing both theorists and experimentalists, to develop new theoretical and computational tools for prediction of material and plasma properties
Recruit and mentor junior staff
Provide leadership in preparing proposals that guide future research directions of the group
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Significant experience in broad areas of modeling and simulation in physics, chemistry, or materials science
Experience in developing novel theoretical models and solutions for multi-physics problems
Demonstrated track record of successfully mentoring students and postdocs
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally
Additional Job Requirements for (Scientist 3):In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requires:
5+ years of relevant R&D; experience
Demonstrated ability to lead projects and research teams in broad areas of expertise in modeling and simulation
Outstanding track record of sustained scientific accomplishment with commensurate publication record
International reputation in relevant area of expertise as demonstrated by publications, invited presentations, professional service and/or professional honors
Familiarity with one or more of the areas: multi-scale physics modeling, atomic processes in plasmas, atomistic simulation, equation of state, or high explosive modeling
Experience building interdisciplinary collaborations, including with experimental groups. Ability to recruit and mentor junior staff
Active DOE Q clearance
PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering or closely related fields
